Thanks, this is actually quite useful. Although there's nothing here you could not find out with a bit of Googling having these general Xbox tech spec and other info all in one place is a very good idea.

Particularly useful are those disc drive tray ID pictures. Many of the Xbox ID resources found elsewhere only include the three most common types and forget the Hitachi.

But even that pic is not complete as its missing the 2 different Philips and its important to differentiate them. 1 was a POS that could only handle DVDs where as the other Philips has the widest compat of all the DVD drives. And only the VAD6035 works for running Sega CD and PS1 games from disc. There is a trick you can do to Hitachi drives though to play CD-rs because it was just locked out in the firmware.

nice work on the info guys. I have some big plans for this place so I appreciate you adding all the info here. I'm planning to add AJAX/JSON databases for absolutely everything on the site including modchips, homebrew, softmods etc etc. I'm even toying with attempting to keep the entire old site online as it is, and giving an option to upgrade to the new look. I want to make the site mobile and tablet friendly as well. So, so much to do really. Finally, I'm going to finish it off with an android app, complete with forums.

Anyway, its a long long way off yet, I am still working under my current contract and its like 24x7, and has been for 3 years now. Your thoughts?

Just a week or so before updating/changing the site let me know and shut down the anti-bot and I can dump the site and put a mirror on Wix or something. Then the old site will stay online and cost bupkis.

Good idea.. At the moment, everything on is backed up monthly and it's getting pretty damn big now - probably gonna hit 1TB soon. (but thats all sites). I'm planning to keep every single file and forum thread as well.. I am somehow going to have to merge it all into the new framework.

The problem with compatibility tables is that you do not know how diligently or extensively the tests have been carried out.

TBH I did not know there were two Thomson and Philips disc drive versions. I have two examples of all the others but only one Philips' a 35/21 and unhelpfully my Thomson is marked as 2003 so I have no idea whether it is an early one or not.

What I can say is that the Philips is the least compatible and least reliable disc drive bar none. I've tested it with nine media types, two different DVD-R makes and they were the only ones which it worked perfectly every time. It hated two different makes of CD-R and DVD-RW whilst giving inconsistent results with everything else I tested.

The Thomson hated the same CD-Rs too but was good with all the rest except DVD+RW where it rejected it a few times but then worked.

As mitigation I'd put some of both the Philips' and Thomson's limited and erratic performance down to age. They're my two oldest disc drives and both came in used machines that had not been well cared for.

If the tray drawers for both the other Thomson and Philips 11/21 are different are there any pictures of those available anywhere?
