Post subject: Help wth upgrading HDD

Hey everyone! I am attempting to upgrade the HDD on my XBox. I am running UnleashX V0.38
I have downloaded the latest version of Chimp to attempt to clone the HDD. Per the instructions, I have attempted to add the "E Partition" folder to the E partition via FTP and have confirmed the transfer has happened. I reboot my Xbox, and I do not see it. I had LPartX on the Xbox, but that has now disappeared. I cannot find the files needed to clone.
Please help!

We need more information but if you haven't followed this:-

tutorial then do so first.

If you still have some problem then:-

1. Xbox: Softmodded, chipped or TSOP?

2. Upgrading original retail HDD to what type (IDE/SATA) and size new HDD?

3. If SATA: what SATA - IDE adapter?

4. If SATA: are you using a replacement 80 wire IDE cable?

5. What Chimp version? You say the latest but re-check - it should be Chimp261812 Rocky5's updated version.

7. Xbox version?

8. Are you using an original Xbox controller no memory cards or other USB devices attached)?

If you're doing a basic clone then I'm not sure what that E partition FTP reference means. Cloning the E partition is part of the process.

HDD jumper settings - should be OK with cable select but if IDE general better to use Slave for the new HDD. But, of course, must be swapped to Master when installed as the new HDD.

9. If softmod did you remember to lock the new HDD ie. the Chimp lock slave option?

The LPartX thing: if you had an older version of Chimp then there might be a linuxboot.cfg on the E drive. That could have interfered with the new Chimp's operation and may have loaded that older version rather than the newer one.

The newer Chimp versions use Gentox and Rocky5 set it up so you do not need that linuxboot.cfg on the E drive at all.

The only other time I've seen a LPartX listed in Apps is I think the original version of HeXEn where the XBE name had not been changed. HeXEn has nothing to do with Chimp.

Thank you for the quick answer! I did watch that video.. the problem is that I can't get the files to show up on my Xbox menu. Now I am extremely new to this so it is completely possible I am putting them in the wrong place. But I am FTPing the "E Partition" folder to the root of E as he says in the video. Still nothing. As to the questions:
1. Softmodded
2. IDE 250gb, Hitachi Cinemastar VLAT80
5. Chimp 261812
7. Looks like a 1.2
8. Yes original controller. This reference is just to moving the "E Partition" folder to the root of E as mentioned in the video. But as a total newbie, I could be misunderstanding this.
9. I did not yet lock, as I thought I needed to do this at the end. Also, I can't get Chimp to show up on my Xbox so did not even get this far.
If it helps I have had success prior to attempting the upgrade with moving emus and games to the Xbox so I have at least learned basic FTP. This just stumps me.
I don't know if this is helpful but I am attaching a screen snip of the E drive from my XBox. The file at the bottom not visible is linuxboot.cfg which was already on the xbox when i got it.
Thank you so much for any help you can give!

The controller matter was/is a hardware issue. Using a non-official controller and/or other peripherals, even an official MS memory card can interfere with Chimp.

It looks like a softmod but the content of your E drive is unfamiliar to me. Do you know how it was softmodded ie. what was used to softmod it?

It might be quite normal for that particular softmod/method but I've never seen an "E Partition" folder like that or the"XBP Table" one which I'm pretty sure means the Xbox Partition Table. But what that is doing there I have no idea.

BANGS HEAD!

Just realised what you've done (I think I warned Rocky5 about this at the time).

The "E Partition" folder is from Chimp, likewise the "XBP Table".

Remove both Chimp and XBP Table from the E drive along with that linuxboot.cfg. Look in your Apps folder and I'd bet you have an older version of Chimp there too. That is the one that was shown in your Apps list as LPartX.

Delete that too.

Now Copy/FTP JUST the "Chimp" folder in the E Partition folder you downloaded and I'd recommend you put it in E:\Apps. That path is supported if you read Rocky5's Readme. Ignore the XBP Table, you do not need it.

Once done reboot the Xbox and you should have Chimp 261812 installed as an app and it should work as intended.

It felt like I was getting somewhere but it then told me the slave could not be locked. Because of that, it disabled some options and I am now able to only Scan IDE devices (the slave IS recognized). I also have "Master Drive Options" and "Other Options".
Sounds like I need to return the drive and order a different one?

That HDD is shown as lockable in all the reports on the HDD compatibility web site.

Make sure the jumpers are set correctly. From the Ebay listings for that drive (HCS725025VLAT80) the jumper setting are a bit unusual:-

Slave: jumpers on both pin pairs 3 and 4.

Master: jumpers on both pin pairs 1 and 4.

Cable Select: jumpers on both pin pairs 2 and 4.

I'd suggest using the Master setting on the original HDD you're cloning and Slave on the Hitachi rather than Cable Select.

Other IDE HDDs just use one jumper to select the priority option and no jumper as Slave (Seagate) or Master (WD).

Not setting the jumpers correctly (before and after) is a very common mistake. Embarassed

Chimp261812 should lock the drive as slave without problem although early versions ie. pre-04/04/2017 sometimes did not show correct locked status for HDDs with "maximum lock".

So if it is not a jumper settings problem and you're unsure about your Chimp version get it direct from Rocky5's GitHub page:-
