Hi, i have a question how to check which modification do i have in my orginal xbox ; i mean softmod or modchip
few years ago someone did for me a modification and i don't know exactly what it is, also could anyone tell me how to replacement orginal dashbord to xbmc while startup. i would like to have a xbmc as major dashboard.
Do i need a cross-lan cable to connect my computer and xbox or regular will be ok?

The only reliable way to check if you have a softmod or chip is to look for evidence of the latter. A TSOP (Google if you don't know what that is) is less likely but still a possibility too.
If the Xbox case has been opened at any time chances are that will be obvious and an indication something has been done to it internally. It could just be the HDD was replaced which is common whether it is a softmod or chipped/TSOP machine.
But if there is no evidence of the case having been opened and there are the tell signs of it being a softmod: original Splinter Cell or 007 AUF or MechAssault game and installer saves, reported retail BIOS, main dashboard XBE on the E:\drive etc, whilst not conclusive proof chances are it is a softmod.
If you do have a softmod then it may well be old and less safe than newer softmods. The general advice would be to update it with one of those like Rocky5's Xbox Softmodding Tool, HeXEn or AID. Installing XBMC as a main dash can be made part of this process.
What I'd suggest looking into before doing anything else is replacing the HDD if it is still the retail <10GB one. Fitting a bigger HDD is considered almost essential whatever mod type you have.
The best way of doing this, if it is softmod, is using the tool: Chimp261812. It will clone your existing HDD which afterwards becomes your backup.
Fit the new clone HDD and do any softmod and other updating to that. If you make a mistake or there is some other problem that original HDD is your recovery tool. This is why I recommend doing that first unless, of course, the Xbox already has had a larger HDD fitted.

Most modchips have an LED that will light on the modchip when it is powered on. Look through the air vent slots on the DVD end of the case. Do you see a light inside?
What version is the kernel/BIOS? Most replacement dashboards can display this value on the screen via an appropriately configured skin or in their settings/system info pages.
