Hey guys I got a problem. I bought this Xbox, 5$ garage sale, great deal. They said "Oh yeah it works!". I was like okkk sureee I'll be the judge of that. Long story short the power button doesn't not work. The only way to achieve turning it on is by pressing the eject button. Normally I could just deal with that but here's the MAJOR problem, When I press the the eject button, the ring will flash green once, maybe two times then shut off. Sometimes it will begin the splash screen for like half a second and the HDD will start too spin up but then shut off. To get it to turn on all the way I have to unplug it and wait over an hour then plug it in and double press the eject button. It's REALLY Irritating. Sounds like a PSU problem but Idk, any advice ?

Confused
well, you could disassemble the unit, give it the full once over...
make sure all is clean and properly seated/secured! Razz and make sure there's NO degraded/bridged parts or that can lead to psu shortouts/reset!
.....
look to youtube/vimeo for "xbox psu/transformer" related!
found THIS by typing into youtube search "xbox psu diagnostics"....hope it helps a bit?!
...
i'm NOT an electronics/repairs expert, just pulling my fkin lead..sorry!
try mixing up the search terms and look around onsite for possible help in the tutorial section or threads of old?!
all the best! Smile

Check the front panel too. Its possible your not getting a proper connection when hitting power or open. Normaly it would ground the circuit allowing power flow and the XBOX to turn on. But if the ground isnt staying connected its quite feasable for it to partial power on then shut off.

Its definatly a hardware issue though. Software wont give this type of error. If you have an HDM capable PC, pull the HDD and check it out with HDM. That way you can eliminate it from the equation. If HDM consistently fails to register the HDD or copy files to or from it, then its pretty good evidence you found the culprit.

If need be you could try replacing the power supply with an ATX one.

Andrew Huang the original xbox hacker has a manual describing it on page 73 of his book, posted free here in honor of Aaron Swartz.

I have not done this myself, others may like to comment on whether this is a realist solution if it needs to be performed. I would certainly like to hear their thoughts.

Ok, well i removed the front panel and i dont really know what to look for ? I have a feeling it might be the power supply though :/

You might want to give this a try: http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/powersupply-fuse.php. My neighbors Xbox had the fuse go out on him a few years ago and fixed it by using that tutorial.

I think if it was the fuse it wouldn't turn on at all, not sure, might be wrong. I heard it's possible to use an ATX power supply ? Anybody know what model/brand/connection type I should be looking for ? And I know its not the HDD because it did this back when it was stock, before any modding/opening of the case. And just to recap, it WILL turn on, but only once like every 1-2hrs otherwise it starts up, fans spin, hdd starts up, makes a kind of beeping like noise, and then shuts down. And idk if i mentioned this earlier but it will only work using the eject button, power button wont shut on or off the console. Sometimes if i press the eject button before the 1-2hr waiting period, it will begin to boot up for a BRIEF millisecond. Flubber starts and dvd tray comes out about half way then closes and shuts off before getting to dash. Confused

^^ if you have a spare to hand, try another xbox psu?! (i'm not convinced it's the transformer if you have a sustained power on period! imo) same dimensions though, two versions of transformer and they DON'T work across the board, M$ in their infinite avarice and stupidity, made the plug/socket entirely different!
found THIS at 'hardforum.com' and THIS at 'llamma.com'....
(dig around llamma, it may have a conversion table for computer transformers?)
it may help?
all the best! Razz

Ok so My xbox version is 1.4, which i believe if i read correctly uses the same standard ATX psu connector as many computers. If I end up buying one,I need one that can fit inside the xbox (Like a mini verision I guess? lol). What should I be looking for? Mini ATX PSU? And no, I wish I had an extra power supply for an xbox lol. My last xbox went up in smoke from the psu so i only have an extra HHD and DVD drive.

Crying or Very sad
out of my hands! (refer to my earliest response to this thread)
according to the infos, 'ATX' transformers are required...
the ones carrying a 3.3v line..the xbox uses this and the other computer transformers DON'T output it natively!
you can create a 'stepper/converter' for any computer transformer to work but that will take some researching on your part!
good luck! Wink Cool
