Someone please help! my Xbox started smoking! And No I don't I mean it picked a bad new habit! I was about to play it one night after I just picked a new "Nyko Airflow" Controller, as soon as I plugged it in to the wall it made a weird buzz like static noise and started smoking! I flipped shit! I quickly unplugged and it looks as if the smoke might be coming from the PSU area. What kind of happened? Is it a cheap fix, do I have to buy a new PSU or can I fix it? Sad

^^ yep!
sounds like you f*cked it... Crying or Very sad
look to youtube for possible solutions on psu repairs?
there's two distinct versions of the transformer so be sure you know what to look for and studied it before hand!
also, i'm going out on a limb here but it's extremely likely you've fried something on the xbox motherboard itself?!
i've done what you described with a MK 1 psx but the pad was official...
some dickhead twisted the cable so badly (bridged/crossed wires) it shorted the console at the controller/HID level on the motherboard and basically, f*cked the psx up totally!
it's psu was fine, i was able to get a boot screen but the pad I/O and mc sockets refused to work or recognise anything plugged into it!
..............
if the pad you plugged into the xbox had it's cable twisted/kinked or frayed, chances are it's destroyed at the HID/pad controller level and will need SERIOUS work as it's fine electronics/chipsets that get affected here!
..........
it won't be an easy fix...
i QUADRUPLE check ALL newly bought/acquired "cabled" controllers before ANY console ever sees them!
.........
have a look at youtube?
it may help?
is it cheap to fix?
dunno! depends on what's up with it and if the parts are readily available?
.....
is it an easy fix?
nothing in life is i'm afraid! (professional skills are required here)
this will test you!
............
btw, i NEVER could fix that f*cked psx, i just salvaged as many parts from it as i could and whizzed the motherboard! Crying or Very sad
all the best!
[edit]
if you have a TRUSTED working pad, plug it in and see if the console behaves normally....

Ok so I tried it with a trusted controller thinking that maybe the nyko airflow caused it due to it require extra power for the fans and everything. And... Nope! Nothing! the damn thing wont even turn on now Crying or Very sad Is there someway I can identify if it was the PSU or Motherboard? I took a glance at it and couldn't see any black smudges or burns or anything! Idk what to do from here, I just want my XBMC back! I bought a mini tv and a new controller and everything hoping to rig together some cool case mods but never had the chance to even brainstorm ideas!

So yeah I took out the psu and flipped it over, sure enough looks like there are some burn spots. Now on youtube it showed how to fix it if the two little silver contacts were burnt but this seems to be burnt in a different area, Heres some pics! Would I be able to fix it with some solder or is it off to goodwill to shell out another 50$ for an xbox ?

Confused (first i've heard of a pad drawing too much power, for that kind of damage, it was a pad or console defect?)
sorry, just got back from IRL shit...
........
okay, i can't say if you'll be able to recover the psu but if i'm looking at those images correctly, that's a short, bridged trace!
looks like the copper circuit path has snapped and lifted from from the pcb!
...
gotta say, doing any kind of mod and being shy of ALL the possible things in mind for repairs is why i'd NEVER do a "case mod" unless i have an electronics degree, which i don't!
.......
get a multimeter/circuit tester and test that destroyed pathway by bridging it with the circuit tester!
you should get some feedback?!
if it's mute/null/no feedback, continue testing all other pathways!
check the components as well!
that destroyed pathway is looking more like the psu contacted some metal shielding on the xbox housing itself! this has been known to spontaneously happen because M$ in all their shitness used a very thin and DEGRADABLE sheet of insulating plastic, best bet is add some rubber washers on top of that sheet where the screw holes are, something like a mm in thickness just to lift the MB that bit further away from the interior shielding, KEEP the plastic insulator film in use still!
.........
use MAINS GRADE KYNAR WIRE to repair that destroyed pathway (or solder if you're that good at thinning it out as a trace but KYNAR is the recommendation here)
............
as xbox psu's are known for their random reasonless crapouts, it's also possible some of the pcb components went so check them!
i have a terrible feeling you may have just got unlucky with the timing, i mean the psu decided to f*ck itself before you got to the console? may not have been the pad after all? check that out as well! i've had MANY tech fold in me in EXACTLY similar circumstances and it's becoming a stress trying to cater to it's whimsies, i can't keep a woman because of it, they refuse to understand but equally as bad, i lose my shit and ATOMIZE the pieces of useless shit using a sledge hammer and a blast furnace! (crap tech doesn't deserve to live) Mad
............
honestly, i can't really give a definite on what caused that to happen but...
1, chalk it up to m$'s shit manufacturing policies! (FOXCONN POS are their main puke)
.........
2, you just got unlucky at the wrong time, the wrong place!
......
3, even if you repair that destroyed pathway, it could burn itself out again so basically, check each and EVERY part of that xbox, ALL of it before you ram the mains back into it....
.......
4, i could be wrong about my initial thoughts of a f*cked pad shorting the HID controller, if it did, the psu wouldn't have f*cked in like that, just reacting to how you told your story! (and relating to a similar occurance of a f*cked HID controller as explained in my earlier response)
...........
5, lastly, coverage is a good thing so sign up to "xbox-hq.com" and post a thread with a MORE detailed FIRST post using what you've posted here and some of the profs may help?
...........
good luck! Wink

Ok so I whipped out my trusty multimeter and tried testing the burnt looking pathways and all of them gave me feed back? Is that good or bad ? Is it possible I could just cover the burnt ones in a trace of solder? I have a ready soldering iron with solder but im trying to avoid buying anything for this xbox anymore until im sure I can fix it or just trash it! and sorry but im kind of a newb still, what is the pcb ? lol. Thanks for the help so far, I was trying to avoid using another site because I know everybody here is so friendly and so f*ckin SMART. Thanks for the help so far REALLY appreciate.

good stuff.

get a couple more and remove the gel/clock caps, clean them up and softmod, then store them away as spares.
