Okay, so I have a softmodded xbox with XBMC as the main dash. I'm using the retail HDD. (8gb)
I have noticed that I seem to be missing some storage space. I've used the "calculate used space" feature in the console file explorer, and added up all the space used by my C:, E:, X:, Y:, and Z: drives and they add up to about 4.22 GB. Add up all the free space and it's about 2.56 GB.
Code:
4.22 GB used
+ 2.56 GB free
= 6.78 GB total
Where's my other GB? Is it being used by my Shadow-C? _________________ Xbox Original

All a stock (OEM) xbox drive can really manage to fit on it are XBMC and maybe a few other things.
I strongly suggest purchasing a larger PATA drive or a SATA drive with a PATA-SATA adapter (the order matters on the adapter).
Before deciding on a specific drive to purchase, you'll want to make sure that it is compatible with xbox HDD upgrades.
If you do decide to upgrade your hard drive and have any questions, feel free to ask here before proceeding with crucial steps you're not 100% sure about.

There's nothing missing - that looks like a standard 8GB hard drive with shadow C enabled. (FYI, shadow C hides about 150MB on the real C).
You might be slightly confused between GB (as used by disk manufacturers) and GiB (as used by operating systems). The explanation in this link isn't exactly right, but the maths is fine.
If your hard drive is actually a 10GB disk then you can use the extra 2GB to give you a small F partition. Just enable and format it using UnleashX.

Another thing to keep in mind with hard drives is the precision of what the box says. When I put my 1TB laptop drive into my 360, it said that I had 927GB left. So an X GB drive is usually somewhat less than what's on the box.
An 8GB drive is good enough to start with for putting XBMC on it, but if you wanna pack a lot of cool emulators on it with your xbox game backups you will eventually need to upgrade to a bigger HDD.
Of course the choice is entirely up to you. But what would you rather do, fret over your console's tiny amount of freespace or just go to >=100GB HDD?

I'm planning to sell this Xbox to a friend, so I'm not going to put a bigger HDD in it. I have a 500 GB HDD to use when I get one for myself. _________________ Xbox Original

Sorry, but that's misleading. There is nothing wrong with the precision of the Xbox's reporting of its hard drive, it's simply that, in common with all computer operating systems, the Xbox reports disk sizes in GiB (multiples of 1024 bytes), while disk manufacturers report sizes in GB (multiples of 1000 bytes). Neither is imprecise or incorrect, they just use different bases for counting.
