I was doing some searching around for info on the 1.6 PSU when I found this:

http://www.freewebs.com/teamrckm/xboxstuff.htm

It sounds unlikely and I wondered if anybody has tried it before or read about it.

If this is legit, then wow! All those people posting complex circuits about attching zener diodes and transistors and inverting signals when you can just do this.

It seems I can use a Battery plus a micro PSU to power a 1.6 Xbox!

I personaly doubt it but you never know. I do know you can buy a board for like 20 bucks that will allow you to use an ATX PSU. Just plug and play so to speak

All of those boards I've seen like that are versions 0 - 5 and I've heard of problems with the traces being too small and they fry themselves after a while.

I'll give it a try. I don't see where it could go wrong, only that it might not work.

I saw someone do it years ago so it does work. I don't see why you'd want to do it though because you could never fit an ATX PSU inside of the Xbox.

Thanks for the confirmation. Ideas why the LEDs go orange? I would suppose it is the lack of the PWRON/OK signal. or maybe linking up all of the 5v and GND points fixes it. Some testing to do when I have the time.

What about that tiny PSU I posted at the bottom of my first post?

there is no reason this would not work. I have an atx psu on my bench rigged up like this, but much cleaner, as power for projects. Can't beat it for the money(free). But this install into an xbox isn't really correct, because you are switching the psu on seperately from the xbox. It is a real MacGuyver way of doing it. I will check to see if I have a 1.6 xbox here, if I do I'll hook it up to my bench supply and report back.

Actually I had an idea about that.

If I put a capacitor between the start button and ground, the start button would charge the cap and then turn the Xbox on. Then you could just scrap the front panel and use the PSU switch.

There must be a more complex and better method though, something that would wait for the Xbox to turn off and then power off the PSU, using the 5VSB to power the circuit. Sounds like something you would program into a chip yourself. I don't have the kit for that.

I'm not exactly sure how the xbox tells the psu when to turn off, never really thought about it. You'd have to look it up, can't be that hard to figure out. If nothing else rig up a microcontroller to do all that stuff for you, then if you wanted to do more stuff with leds or fans or whatever you have the option of using the chip for it Smile I should build one like that.

Its like you said, programming a chip yourself...not as hard as it sounds Smile But, I'm sure there is an easier way of doing it.

Is it like programming:

if pin1.Voltage > 3.1 and pin1.Voltage < 3.5 then
makeconnection(pin2, pin3)
end

???

There is a shop near me which sells the programmers and a few chips but I don't know if they would be useful to me. And if it was programming I would hope I didn't make an infinite loop and explode the chip (I've crashed programs like this too much) :/

yeah if you wanted to get into that sort of thing get an arduino to mess with and after a few weeks you'd be able to get it to do what you want, then you can buy atmega chips to match the arduino you are using and pull them off and use them standalone. but you could definately use them to run a psu for an xbox and whatever other crazy stuff you wanted to do. although as i said before, there has got to be an easier way to do it, if you mess with it for a while

Well if I was going to create it, I would want on button that:

Powered on the PSU
Started other stuff like audio board and LCD display
Waited for a sec
Powered on the Xbox

Yes, my next project is an Xbox laptop. It will happen now that I've researched so much. Just need some thin bits of rigid metal, lots of info like "will it work?" and a case (somewhat important but hard to make) and I'll start buying and building.
I can tell tomshardware/Xbox-HQ will be getting a few more related posts by me :) I think for the GPU heatsink I will butcher a Socket F heatsink (if I have the tools for cutting that much metal).
I think the worklog for this that a lot of you would be interested in will be posted after I finish and if all parts I use are still available, I will be selling for massive prices! (obviously, because you are looking at: screen + case + laptop drive + audio board + PSU + custom case + lots of wiring + xbox itself + speakers + some difficult wiring + lots of butchered parts + magic + my awesomesauce)

sure you could, some of the dell/hp/compaq micro form factor and terminal systems have tiny 90w atx psu's they should fit if you take off the metal casing.

I just did this mod after hours of trying to melt the solder I had already put there. Seems the iron just wasn't conducting the heat. So I just tied the wires together in the end.

I noticed a few strange things. I didn't get the orange LED. The Xbox fragged if I tried to boot it more than once in one PSU on session.

This means I will need a small battery to hold the time. I don't want to reset it every time I go on the laptop unless I use the laptop every four hours. Does anybody know about this mod? I heard it is replacing a cap with a penny battery.
