Hello, just registered on this site and way before doing this it was still fun looking thru it,and after getting the hang of how the mods are done I've found myself satisfied in doing them in the first place

Now,my story on how I've modded by Xbox:

I just recently bought a Xbox second hand and to my surprise it was a 1.4.Not everyday you can come across this in my town (most boxes I've found are either 1.0,1.1 or 1.6b),so I got it because I felt it was worth it.

I've also got luck for getting it since it has a Delta PSU and not the Foxlink bombs.I try avoiding Foxlink PSUs like poison.

Well, what was the first thing to do?Softmod it,of course!Tons of searches later, and I was finding myself getting SID5 Pimped CD edition. (due to my own XBOXHDM disc being worth nothing but error 13)10-15 minutes later,my box was softmodded. While I was at it with the box opened,I thought "I'll do the TSOP too since it's worth it!".Been there, done that, and I had the X2 4981 BIOS booting up.Installed a temporary 10GB Seagate until I can get a bigger harddrive (20 or 40GB will suffice).

And this is my story of how my Xbox got modded.

Hope I didn't do anything bad for writing this, and I want to say a thank you to SPPV for making the SID5 Pimped installer. It does wonders.

I found you originally on YouTube - and this seems like the best site for info, especially considering the software seems to have originated here. But, I'm still confused.
I've got one of the original (think, camped outside a store) Xboxes. It rarely gets used now - but my son is very interested.
I have XBMC on my media PC, attached to the plasma. I'm familiar. So, I'd like to be able to run XBMC on the Xbox, along with the original disk games, and maybe a few emulators.
I don't have Splinter Cell. I don't really want to cut up a connector/USB. So, is the best way now, in 2015, to use the Autobuilder V3 and HotSwap?
I'm sorry - I really did search the forums. But it seems all the tutorials are many years old. If there is a much different/easier way, I don't want to miss it.
Many Thanks

There are several ways of modding or softmodding a Xbox but by far the easiest IS to use the Splintercell exploit with a working ie. Xbox compatible USB memory device.

Used original Splintercell is easily found and you may still be able to find Xbox controller port to USB(F) or *controller to USB(M) adapter cables on eBay or the the like. Make sure they are not XB360 ones as the sellers don't always make the distinction and they are not interchangeable.

*The exploits should be small enough to fit on an official Xbox memory card. So don't ignore that option as it avoids the lottery of finding a working flash drive or other memory device.

They must be no bigger than 4GB and formatted to FATX by the Xbox before use. The latter is the problem and there is nothing you can do if the Xbox doesn't like the particular one you're using.

If you really don't want to do it this way then it is a choice between fitting a chip, which can still be found, or building a new HDD using XBHDM. I've no direct experience of using either method so hopefully somebody else here will be able to advise.

It is good to know that method (Splinter Cell) is still a viable option. Thank you for the info.

However, I have a 160GB drive that I'd like to put in, so I still assume the hotswap would be the way to go?

I just wish I could find a more recent tutorial that was step by step basic. There are three ways to do this: Hard Mod, SoftMod with game exploit, or Softmod with Hotswap.... and then spelled out step by step how to do each one, along with somewhat current links to the software needed.

I've spent time at other forums where some technology hack was the subject. There would be a sticky in the tutorials that was constantly updated with the newest revisions, programs, links, etc. So there is just one place to visit and the info is always there and current (as can be).

I realize this is different because softmod xbox 1 seems to be mostly abandoned.

I do sincerely appreciate the response though. Thx.

I found AutoBuilder V5.1 and although the download links all seem to be dead, I did eventually find and download the file. It seems like one of the last things posted by SPPV - at least the most recent thing I can find.

I may give this one a try.

I understand the problem about finding a single good source of information about these matters which was and is still actually kept up to date. The other well known forum for Xbox modding discussions rarely updated its tutorials and certainly hasn't done so recently. It is as quiet as this place is now and all the newer, more relevant information it has there is dispersed throughout hundreds of different threads.

However, there are still other far more active forums where you can get excellent, up to date advice on all the methods. The one I know and visit regularly still have people there compiling new installers and other Xbox modding related tools.

Unfortunately I can't tell you where it is or I suspect I'd get into trouble here. But if you search you may come across it on your own.

Try finding the AID (Auto-Installer Deluxe) or SID PDF manuals. They are far from up to date but contain some of the clearest, still applicable and best presented information about modding/softmodding.

Search also for HeXEn (Heimdall's Xbox Engineering Disc) as post modding it is one of the best Xbox upgraders/toolsets created.

Excellent! Thanks for the info. Yes, I've looked at scores of other forums and sites. Many have older posts by SPPV. I'm glad this forum still gets some attention as well.

Getting no where so far. Burning with IMGBURN was easy enough. I do that often. But after I booted and got to the point of typing xboxhd, it tells me that there is no Linux cd in the drive. Technically that is true because I burned it onto a dvd. But it IS in the drive and I'm stuck.
I thought maybe my xb hdd wasn't open, but I have no way of knowing. I did the unplug dvd, did the burn music cd and play, tried a few other tips to make sure the xb hdd was spinning and open. But I'd assume the no cd message has more to do with the hdd than the cd.
At any rate, I'll keep working on it - or abandon this process in favor of some plan B.

Update, for what it is worth.
I finished the softmod with NDure 3.1 and Xplorer360 (hotswap). I had to give up on the other methods because I only have one IDE on my computer and couldn't seem to get the xb hard drive and the dvd to play nice on the same cable.
Unfortunately, unleashx seems to be useless for backing up and copying the eeprom. So now I have to figure out how to FTP and install Evox and/or xbmc. I didn't really want to do all that until I put the new HDD in the xbox. But, oh well. It is what it is.
Tried to make a Hexen disk, but either I did something wrong or my xbox doesn't recognize DVD+R OR DVD-R. I tried both. Told the xbox to reboot and it just opened in unleashX each time.

By the way, Xplorer360 only recognized my xbhd when run in admin mode. And in admin mode, I couldn't drag and drop files. SO this is very tedious. Had to right click, add new folder, install folder, install files, ONE at a time. For anyone else that might see this, turn off (or set to low security) your UAC settings and reboot your PC BEFORE you start the Xplorer360 process. It might save you a lot a trouble. I was already into it and didn't want to restart my PC for fear of screwing up my xbhd.

With game exploit softmods both MS dash and eeprom backups are done as an integral part of the process. Don't blame UnleashX for not having an eeprom backup option, XBMC doesn't either only EvoX of the ones I've used does.

If you upgrade the softmod using HeXEn or AID or indeed install AID (has to be done from disc) as an app that has full backup options too.

Not sure why you should be having trouble burning Xbox readable discs:_

DVD-R is considered the universal compatible media for all disc drive types. Use a well known make - I've yet to have a failure to read using Philips media.

Use ImgBurn probably the most recommended 'free' burner on Xbox forums to burn the ISO ie. "Write Image File To Disc"

Burn at the lowest speed supported but otherwise default settings (Verify checked).

Both HeXEn and AID can take a long time to boot, AID in particular may take 45+ seconds.

If it doesn't work you should try looking for a fresh HeXEn download elsewhere and make sure it is Heimdall's Xbox Engineering disc ISO and not the install version or even Hexen the game. Smile

If it still won't boot from disc then there's a chance your Xbox's disc drive is dodgy. Cold booting or rebooting with the disc in the drive should automatically launch any disc. Are there any problems reading original Xbox game discs?

Without the disc drive working reliably FTPing is really the only viable option. It is easy enough to do but brings with it a whole load of other possible problems too.

One thing I would suggest is that you do not try to replace UnleashX with EvoX as your main dash via FTP if that is what you were thinking of doing. It is asking for trouble. Install EvoX in E:\Apps and you can use the eeprom backup in just the same way.

Thank you for the advice. I did ftp evox over into the apps folder. And then I simply ran it from the xbox. I knew not to "replace" the dash while running. So I was able to back up my eeprom in that manner.

Maybe the media I used for burning the HeXEn disk (with imgburn) was the problem. Who knows. I'll try again sometime since it seems like a very useful tool. My xbox does read games and dvds just fine.

Here is what I did, and it worked. My problem was I couldn't use the xboxhdm because my computer only has one IDE on the MB. Every time I tried, the Linux program would fail trying to recognize the hd. So, I used Chimp to clone the HD and then I swapped the HD from the xbox IDE to my computer IDE. Maintained power throughout. Did NOT lock the HD after cloning.

Once connected to my PC, I used Xplorer360 to transfer/replace the C and E contents on the cloned HD with the C and E files created by Autobuilder5.1 (stored in the xboxhdm folder on my PC C root). Then I swapped the HD back into the cloning (slave) position on the xbox running chimp. First attempt to then Lock the drive was unsuccessful as the drive was "frozen." But after I powered off and reconnected it, Chimp was able to lock the drive.

So, having a pc with 2 ide slots or having the Hexen disk would have been easier. But this way worked.

Finally, I used Chimp again to partition the F and G drives. So now my box is modded with a new 500GB HD.

The hard work is done. Now I can spend my time playing with all the options for Emulators, XBMC plugins, etc. I don't even know what this box is capable of yet.

Sincere thanks for the help.

Hello, here's one newbie or "newbie". I've had modded xbox for ages, but now I accidentally found old DuoX2 GS (blue) in the midst of old stuff. Had to buy 2nd xbox of course, but now I'm stuck.

I can't find installation guide for that chip. Every other guide says it applies to every duox2 version, but I don't really get that one. I have this extra "1.6 circuit board" which isn't found in any guide. Is that for Xbox 1.6 version only? I have 1.4. My pinheader is 1 piece, but other guides have 2 pinheader pieces.

If that 1.6 board is only for version 1.4, should I just use guide which "applies to every version" and leave that 1.6-board be.

Installation would be just to solder pin header to mobo, chip to pin header and wire to d0? AND to remove extra pins, like in this diagram http://www.knightdiscounts.com/VideoGames/modchi153.jpg pins between H and I?

Well, I installed the chip - I guess. Now startup screen gives yellow xbox-logo and text "XECUTER2" pops to bottom of the screen. Does this mean everything has gone well?

Do I need to flash bios now or..?

Yes, but I#m not the one to be giving advice on this as I've never done it myself despite the fact I too use a Xbox with a Xexcuter 2.6 chip. It was professionally fitted and flashed for me.

What I do know is that you have to be careful to use a BIOS of the correct size and type for your particular Xbox version. There are tutorials out there but unless yoy're confident you know what you're doing I recommend you get some specialist advice from somebody who knows more about such matters.
