I picked up a V1.4 Xbox from a guy at my dads work in October of 2008. I attempted to softmod it a few times but if I remember correctly after the Xbox rebooted it would hang at the startup screen. I then uninstalled the softmod each time and put it back to stock. After a week or so of trying to softmod it I gave up and just left it hanging (again, if I remember correctly).

Tonight I decided to bust it out and get to the bottom of it. Turned the Xbox on, got to the Xbox screen and the Microsoft text appeared, and then it hangs. Just sits there and does nothing. So then I tried starting the Xbox up with the eject button, same story. Then I put in mechassult and tried to start up the Xbox. Again, same story, hung at the Xbox screen. Then I unplugged the IDE cable out of the hard drive to see if I would error code. Starting up with power button hangs at the Xbox logo without the Microsoft text and never displays an error code. If I start it with eject after about a minute error code 07 will be displayed.

So then I tried a different IDE cable out of my other Xbox (which I know for sure is working because I just used it before I started working on this Xbox), still hangs at Xbox screen. I then decided to look at the jumper setting on the hard drive. I first tried it on Master and then on cable select, same story, Xbox logo.

On top of this, everything seems extremely delayed. It takes a second or two to start up and shutdown after the power button is pressed. Getting it to error is extremely delayed as well. I have no idea what the problem is. I'm going to TSOP this Xbox and I need to have it softmodded first so I can boot AID up after I solder the points.

My guess would be the harddrive.. but its a guess.. I had one of these xboxes before that did this, and never ever got it working until i chipped it.

Well damn....I wanted to go the cheap method and just TSOP it. Maybe I'll try an eeprom reader if SPPV doesn't have any ideas.

Just today I have a similar problem.
I did a softmod with Ndure. In part 2/3 I got this
"cp: unable to open "/xbox/c/xboxdashdata.185ead00/" : Is a directory"

Having the HDD back in the xbox and starting it up. After the X logo and microsoft I get a black screen. And it remains so. No Error Codes. The same with a dvd in it.
I have never had this before. And can't figure it out. Thought about the dash version and kernel. But they were the latest.

Both of you need to hotswap the HDD. This is caused by either a missing or corrupted XBE. Unplug the the IDE and power from the DVD and boot it up, if its a WD HDD you should hear a faint click from the HDD- its now unlocked, swap to PC, and use Pimped for the rebuild/mod, just do a default install -build hdd from scratch.

Ive had this issue many times, mainly with failing drives that Ive confirmed by reformating NTFS and checking with Partition Wizard Pro 6, causing data corruption. This is just a temp fix and the second you get the eeprom replace that HDD.

In RoyalX case its caused by buggy program, but the result is the same.

Muchos Gracias. Thanks again SPPV

I followed your vids tutorial and it worked.

For me it was the wrong kernel in Ndure as it says on the readme file.
Been a while since I modded one, so I forgot.

@RoyalX

If I were you Id get that EEPROM backed up and transfered to your PC asap if you havent already. And either use Spoof Disc+, E22Fix Disc, Hexen, UBD4, or AID to redo the mod. Im sure you will find the Kingroach Ndure can be buggy mainly due to the inclusion of the dual NKPatcher8 and UDE softmods. Its great in theory but can make you susceptible to very simple things like clock loop, refusing burned or hdd backed up games without repatching them first. Just the fact of the kernel specific mod speaks volumes to age. The newest Ndure uses NK10 and SID5 uses 11 both by XMEN. Both are kernel generic and work on all and lack the UDE backup mod

@SPPV

I always redo it with AID. I use Ndure/XboxHDM only to softmod. So after I done it with Pimped, I redo everything with AID.

But from now I am gonna use Pimped cause I noticed the failure in Ndure.

And thanks for the explanation. But I noticed something after I Pimped it.
The time and date was just right. How is this possible when the HDD is formatted? Is it because the thingy on the mobo?

Alright, got it working. Hotswapped it and it booted up just fine. Used AID on my 1.0 Xbox to setup my memory card with SID 5.10. SID 5.10 single boot - standard installed just fine this time and I have a backup of the eeporm.

Now I need to figure out where to go from here. I've never done a TSOP before and I can't seem to find any guides that have a motherboard that looks like my Xbox According to Xbox-Scene, this Xbox should actually be a V1.1. However, the points it tells me to solder for a 1.0/1.1 are no where to be found on my board. Is there any newer guides that aren't from 2004 that show what points to solder, and also what bios I can put on it?

On a side note, my friend is picking me up a new hard drive for this bad boy on wednesday so that shouldn't be a problem anymore.

If you switch you can save yourself a few steps since not much point redoing the mod since its identical to what SID5 or AID would do and come with apps and emus. The time is stored for a few hours on the mobo thats why it had the proper time. Once the battery runs out or its been unplugged for a few hours you need to reset the time

Yes, the time is on the motherboard, for all computers. Some have little batteries in that keep a clock crystal going that is something like 1khz to advance the time every millisecond. Xbox has a few clock crystals, one next to the processors and a few elsewhere, one of which would be for time and then a capacitor that acts like a short-life battery. Sorry for the massive explanation.

Got myself a new tip for my soldering iron today and TSOPed the Xbox. Was easy as hell with a real fine tip and a 15W soldering iron. Took literally 5 minutes, and most of it was setup. My Xbox now has the X2 5035 bios on it Very Happy

Getting my new hard drive tomorrow and then I'll have an 80gb in this bad boy. It was so fun, I kind of wish I had another one around here to TSOP Confused
