I am a newbie and just burned auto installer deluxe to a DVD. I did this because the xbox I bought at a garage sale gives me an error code of 06. I did some research and saw that this was HDD locked. Most of the stuff I read told me to put the HDD back in the original xbox and unlock it. But, I do not have the original xbox. I thought that AID would allow me to access my HDD and unlock it. But, when I put the DVD into my xbox, the xbox gives me the screen with the cool 'X', but then I get the call for service screen with the 06 error. Could someone help me out.

Ok Im slightly confused by your post. Is the hard drive in the XBOX the one that was in it when you bought it at the garage sale? If it is that means either they switched out the hard drive our they were messing around with a program like config magic and switched the EEPROM. Your only hope is to build an eeprom probe/reader and get the eeprom code straight from the chip on the MOBO otherwise you will never get that drive unlocked and relocked with the proper eeprom for that XBOX

Thanks for the help! My girlfriend actually bought the XBOX at a garage sale for her nephew and now I have to fix it since it doesn't work. I have never even seen an xbox before last week. Sorry about the confusion. The HDD that is locked is that one that came with the unit from the garage sale. I do not have any other HDDs or xboxes. I have no history about the past owner or what he/she did to the xbox. It sounds like I should just throw it away though. I did read that for AID to work, I need to buy a softmod chip? Will this work? You suggest that I try to get some info off of the EEPROM, but even if I can get something off of the EEPROM, how do I boot the xbox to unlock it? Everytime I boot the xbox, I get the service screen. I thought that the xbox would use AID to boot and open up some screens that I could use tp unlock the HDD. I guess I'm very uneducated on the xbox and need some instruction before I can try to trouble shoot further.

Theres realy nothing you can do, the only way to lock that HDD is with the EEPROM, and no homebrew unsigned code will run until the XBOX has been exploited, which cant be done as long as the XBOX cant even lock and unlock the HDD. Take a look at this video, if you had the EEPROM thios is what you would be doing.

Thanks again for your time and knowledge! I don't know what I'll do at this point. I may just junk it, or sell it for parts if I can.

Thanks for the link! The homemade EEPROM reader sounds fun, I just might try it!!! But now, after reading the article, I'm concerned that my DVD player isn't working. Is there a way that I can determine if my DVD player is working properly? I thought that the AID DVD would let the system boot, but if the DVD Player is broken, I guess I'll never get the AID DVD to boot.

You can't really confirm that at the moment because you can't get the Xbox to boot up. If the Xbox had a mod chip it in, then you would be able to boot AID up and be on your way. However, it sounds like the Xbox you have was probably softmodded at some point, you can't boot to AID until the Xbox is remodded.
So if you do go with the EEPROM reader, you need to get the EEPROM, use XboxHDM to lock the hard drive to the EEPROM from the Xbox, and then use SID 5.01 to softmod the Xbox again. To softmod the Xbox, you will need one of three games, so that will tell you if your DVD drive is working or not.
If the DVD drive doesn't work don't fret too much. There is a few things you can do before you can officially call it a bad drive. If it is a bad drive it's an easy fix. You can just buy a new one off Ebay or something similar and just pop it in. DVD drives aren't like the hard drives and aren't attached to a particular console in any way, so they are easy to swap out. _________________
