How hard is it to do this? I saw a video of an xbox that had an LG drive in it. Do you need a mod chip?

You don't really gain anything by doing this mod and you have to have a special chip soldered to the DVD drive I'm pretty sure for it to work. It's really a pointless mod because the normal xbox DVD drive does the exact same thing. _________________

Thanks for the confirm thought so the only reason to do it would be is if your drive goes bad then.

Even then its easier and probably cheaper to just buy an XBOX Philips or Samsung drive on EBAY and switch it out. Theres no messing around just take the dead one out and put the new one in. By modding your Box you accomplished everything that a LG would have done for you plus way more

Exactly. If the drive goes out on your Xbox all you have to do is either get a new lens (if they still make replacements) or just get a new Xbox DVD drive off Ebay. _________________

lg 8163 dvd-rom mod. No chip needed for this model, 8164 needed the flash chip. You need to find the firmware on Xbins and do a firmware flash to the drive. OK, now the tech stuff...
1) 16x drive is great, except you use a 40 wire cable which is slowing the r/w, so you need to make an ata/100 or ata/133 cable to work.

I read that you were interested in further information on what improvements (if any) the ATA100 mod has on the Xbox. So, I did some rough benchmarking - using the same system, I timed loads of games prior to and following the ATA100 mod install. I used the ATA100 cables you provide ...
Anyway...
The setup: 1 Un-moded Xbox system
The Test:
Halo: 1 Player, Normal Difficulty, Level 1 Load (Pillar of Autumn)
Halo: 1 Player, Normal Difficulty, Level 5 Load (Silent Cartographer)
Prince of Persia: New Game, Loading prior to first movie / level
SW - Knights of the Old Republic: Loading of Saved Game on planet Kashyyyk
*All recorded times rounded to the nearest 1/2 sec.
So the ATA100 Mod improves load times ~20-30% - Quite a reasonable improvement for such an inexpensive part. Worthwhile for any Xbox user to do.
2)If you are using the original harddrive, it slows the system to that speed. It's an ata 66, so this limits the speed to ata 66.
The xbox is capable of ata100.. the original ide ribbon is ata 33 and the original xbox harddrive is ata 66, so in summary, the slowest piece of equipment is your limit.
Needless to say, I did it all to my crystal xbox and halo definitely loads and plays better, as other things. I'm just looking for the 1.2ghz cpu to swap in now and see how HD/mkv files choke it out
