I have a v1.4 XBox with X2 chip and 500Gb hard drive. It's slowly dying, it randomly switches off and on and the power button doesn't work (I have to turn it on with the DVD open switch). I thought it was just the power switch PCB so I bought another XBox off eBay and swapped the switch, but it still does the same thing. I assume it's either the power supply or motherboard so my old trusty 1.4 is on the way out.
The "parts" XBox I bought is a stock v1.2 - no mod chip and still with the original hard drive. I'm the first person to open it. I would like to install XBMC on this. I won't have the 500Gb from the last box but I can at least watch TV shows over the network.
I don't have any of the games one ordinarily does to softmod otherwise I'd have done it that way. Am I able to use my v1.4 with X2 modchip to install a softmod and auto-boot XMBC onto my unmodded v1.2's hard drive? If so, how? I've tried reading FAQs but all the softmod installers seem to mention booting via the softmod games and I'm somewhat confused.

No you cant, you could possibly remove the chip and hardmod the other XBOX but otherwise your limited to either the Game save exploit method or hotswap. As far as stress goes do the Game Save, Hotswapping is a bitch. Until you get the trick of it hotswapping will drive you around the bend, but if you do choose to go that route I recomend using Kingroach Ndure and Xboxhdm to do it.
Without the EEPROM lockcode its impossible to modify the XBOX any way other than listed above
I thought about your problem a bit and this is what you need to do. Take the chip out put it in the second box, FTP off the EEPROM to your PC make a Kingroach XBOXHDM disc adding the EEPROM file. Take the chip out and put it back in the original XBOX. Put the drive you want to upgrade to in your PC (unhook all other HDD) set it to Master throw n your Kingroach/XBOXHDM disc, reboot the PC and boot from disc. Build a new drive and lock it using the EEPROM on the disc that was FTPed over from the stock box. Put this drive in the XBOX and good to go.
