I softmodded my xbox years ago (when they first came out) via the Splinter Cell trick, but haven't touched it until recently. 3 days ago I dug up the xbox and wanted to make it godly. I used AID v4 to get the latest unleashX dashboard (my fav) and put some nice apps on it. Problem is im now running out of space fast. I bought a new 160gb seagate harddrive that is lockable and should work fine.
Where im having trouble is the whole BIOS issue. I have a v1.0 xbox (pretty sure) with the retail 4817 BIOS. I've read countless guides on how to upgrade the HDD but none of them tell me exactly where the BIOS update comes in. From what I gather, I need to update my BIOS in order to use the full 160 GB of the harddrive, or else I'll only be able to use something around 130 GB.
If someone could shed some light, I'd gladly appreciate it.
tl;dr -
Do I update the BIOS before or after placing the new HDD in?
What program do i use to update the BIOS?
What BIOS do I need?
No need to do any Bios updating, Install Chimp as an App , Run Chimp, swap the DVD Drive for the new Harddrive and follow the onscreen prompts. (theres a tut for it somewhere on the site)
Yours is possibly a v1.1 if you are running the 4817 bios, does it have a Daughter board for the controller ports ? _________________

Thanks for the help.
I got the case off the xbox but i'd rather not drop a nuke on it and open it up further until the new HDD arrives. I don't see how there could be a daughter board though (it's cramped in there). Any other tips for a noob?

Well I've ran into a problem now. For some reason after booting the box, the MS dash got corrupted or something and now I'm getting the grand ol' Xbox Error 21. Ive already made a backup of the dash on the C and E drives, the problem is I can't get to it since the error comes up. My new drive will be here on friday.
How exactly can I fix the error and get to that backup? Or is it possible to just snatch the data from the drive once the new one comes?
My xbox can play games fine, just not installers like AID and SID.
Can you run the game you originally used to softmod the xbox ? You might be able to access the softmod menu if the installer is still on the harddrive, you could then FTP in and copy your data over.
If that fails and you have the game 007 AUF i have a TSOP flash exploit that you could run and FTP into it. _________________

Nah, I had to wipe my saves and other data in order to get my xbox working (the reason why i haven't used it in so long). I still have Splintercell but no cheat on the HDD for it.
Can I just unlock the retail HD by unplugging the IDE cable then hook it up to a computer and transfer the data? UPS mixed up my order so I've still got like another week until the new drive arrives.
you could try to unlock the hard drive then access it through xplorer360 _________________

Alright well I got the HD to unlock and tried a hacky hotswap method but xplorer360 was unable to read the drive which made me baww. But it turns out my friend built a computer specifically for modding xboxes, don't ask me why, and he's going to come help me out when the new drive comes.
Again, thanks for all the help - it really cleared things up. So many tutorials >.<

you dont specifically need Action Replay, try one of your flash drives and use xplorer360 to transfer the SID or Krayzie softmod files over. _________________

I understand you dont want to reset it, but, you can include the SID files in the XBOXHDM disc you create, that way its ready for your softmodding game!
I have used this to save my life at least a handful of times, and it works, so if you have no other choice, you may have to result to doing so.... _________________ Hotswap Tutorial|FTP Tutorial|HyperX Flashing Tutorial

Interesting. I don't really have anything to lose since my larger HD will arrive mid next-week. So if I understand correctly, I should:
- Hotswap the retail HD to my comp
- reformat the drive with xboxhdm
- after it's formatted, use xplorer to add Softmod files
You could do that, but Hypnotix suggestion is worth a shot, it involves including the softmod files in XBHDM, Hopefully he will help you out with it because its something i`ve not tried. _________________

I got the MS dash fixed and only have to re-softmod my xbox now.
Thanks for everyone who helped
