Hey guys,
So I've been playing around with soft modding on of my XBox's, and it got me curious to try playing around with recovering my other older system, that I had long thought a lost cause, but never got rid of. I'm not sure that there's really much hope for it, but I thought I'd explain what (little) the system currently does, and see if anyone has any thoughts. Basically, if I hit the power button when I have it plugged in, the front led will blink green twice, then go to a solid green. Nothing appears on the screen, and no other activity is apparent (i.e. no fans spinning, no obvious activity from the hard drive, etc). Like I said, very little happens, but it's not 100% dead. The
Anyways, if anyone has any ideas on what may be going on here, and if this is salvageable to any degree (if not a full system up and running, at least possibly recovering all the original save data from it), I'd appreciate the input. I don't know if it matters, but the system is a 1.0 (I'd assume, since it was bought at launch), and has never been modded in any way, soft or other.
Have you had any failed mod attempts with this xbox or has it never been tampered with in the past ?
Theres a few things that can cause it to frag, but if it hasn`t previously been modded i would inspect the motherboard for any signs of corrosion to the traces or check the PSU with a multimeter. _________________

Hi Rogue100,
User1 has some good suggestions for you..
But like he mentions the more info you can give us or should i say find out about and tell us will be helpful.
As far as the xbox in question, I had never attempted any sort of mod on it prior to when it quit working. Nor had anyone else before me, as I was the one who bought it retail from the store, so it had no prior history to it.

Well, I had previously only partially examined the interior of the system to see if anything was obviously wrong, by removing the hdd, and inspecing the psu, and the part of the motherboard that was visible. That showed no visible damage. At your suggestion though, I removed the dvd drive, to examine the rest of the motherboard. The damage was immediately apparent. In the front corner, on the dvd side of the case, is a scorched area, where, according to pictures of the 1.0 motherboard online, a resistor of some sort should be. The one next to it is blackened from carbon, and barely attached to the motherboard. I don't know what caused that, but whatever it was couldn't be good. Anyways, I'm guessing that means the motherboard is out of commission, and that means I'm S.O.L., but I'm hoping someone can tell me otherwise.
All is not lost.
Is it possibly one of the Capacitors ?
The Aerogel cap that keeps the time sometimes swells up, leaks or explodes. Give the area a clean with some alcohol and inspect the board again, if the solder pads and traces are still intact just solder in a replacement .... If its just the one cap, and its the one for the internal clock give the area clean and try booting the console, it`ll work without it, it may be just the residue giving a frag. _________________

Well, I followed your suggestion, and tried to clean the damaged spot. It quickly became apparent that the damage was more significant than I had thought. The damage was into the circuit board itself, rather than just on the surface, and more than just the one component I had first thought was missing. At any rate, I wasn't able to have much in the way of success with cleaning it. Just to see, though, I went ahead and tried to boot it, and got no change in its behavior.
Despite that, I found a partial solution that saved my data from the hard drive. After looking around some, I found this:
My hdd from the system in question is the Seagate ST310211A 10GB drive, so the first section applied to me. That page doesn't say whether this is safe for data, but I looked around some more online for info about the process, and found out that it was supposed to be safe for data. So I gave it a try, and succeeded in flashing the firmware of the drive, leaving it unlocked. Then I used the xboxhdm disc I had made to relock it with the eeprom from my working xbox. I swapped it into my working xbox, and the dashboard loaded up without incident. When I went to the memory section, of the dashboard, all my save data was there just as it was when the it's original system stopped working.
