No need for your xbox to be online,
once you are running a modded dash, under the `settings` heading you can access the network settings, change its IP to something like 192.168.0.2
then, on your PC change the IP address of your NIC to something in the same range, eg : 192.168.0.1
Connect the two together with a crossover cable
then download some FTP client, FlashXFP seems popular, i prefer Total Commander (Check it out, its got some useful xbox plugins) create a new connection to the xboxes IP, use the username and password `xbox` then click `connect` - Hopefully you will see all the partitions/folders (C,E,X,Y,Z) of your xboxes harddrive.

Right but in theory I don't have to go the FTP route if I have my memory card formatted to work with the xbox right? I can just move the files using the mem card can't i??
Due to being unmodded the only option you have is to use the memory card to get the SID files on your xboxes hard drive.
Once modded FTP comes in handy if you have large rom packs to transfer to your installed emulators and also for stuff like dash skins. _________________

Yeah at the moment the machine isn't softmodded but once I have SID installed and want to then move things to the xbox hdd (purely install files for CHIMP and AID etc, not looking to store much data) CAN I use my memory stick or do you HAVE TO use FTP? Because FTP is another thing I'm going to have to learn and I'm kinda overloading with the prospect of installing SID, AID and Chimp and then modding my hdd for the moment lol. Will I be able to move the CHIMP files to install them via the mem stick or do I have to use FTP?
Just so I know I have this right:
Install SID
Install AID (From dvd/cd, burn from iso? I will check the AID website FAQs)
Install CHIMP (can the files simply be transferred over via mem stick? Also, none of the files in the unzipped folder are recognisable, is that correct?)
You can just install SID and get your softmod up and running, thats it, you have a modded xbox - If you want to install Emulators, Applications (Chimp) and various other Dashboards use AID to install them, burn the disc as an image (.iso) and boot your xbox with it. _________________

Ok so I must be missing something then cos I thought AID was another thing you installed on your xbox like the SID, is it just an app on a disc or does it actually install something to the machine? So its best to use AID if I want to change the way my dashboard LOOKS but you couldn't actually do that UNTIL the SID program is running, correct? Thanks for all the patience lol
Thats right, SID is the softmod files that enable your xbox to run all manner of Homebrew.
AID is a homebrew disc that contails the best of xbox programs and tools, select what you want and within a couple of button presses it`ll install your choice of stuff to the relevant location on the xbox. _________________

Also, on another note, you cannot use a memcard to transfer files back and forth other than game saves.
FTP will be the best way, you can however, burn items to a disc and rip them from the disc via the file explorer on the xbox. Honestly, FTP is the best as i said above, and i am here to help you with that as well!!!! _________________ Hotswap Tutorial|FTP Tutorial|HyperX Flashing Tutorial

cool thanks for explaining, and thanks again for bearing with me lol, the whole FTP thing has come into focus for me now. I will use that guide (Cheers Hypnotix) to link up my xbox to pc. I do have a couple of questions for you though (@ the real). I'm in a crap situation in terms of ethernet ports etc. If I explain what I have you'll hopefully understand where my problem may lie.
I have the following:
Orange Broadband via ADSL (phone line with filter to split bb and phone)
ADSL connects to my Orange provided wireless modem
My pc connects to the net via Ethernet port
My laptop and 360 connect to the net wirelessly
Based on the above I'm pretty sure I have to go with the cross over cable rather than ethernet via switch/hub. I found this guide (http://www.xbox-hq.com/html/xbox-tutorials-275.html) in the tutorials section and I now understand the difference between the two as well. So hopefully this will mean I can bypass my crappy network and connect the xbox direct to my laptops ethernet port.
I found a crossover cable at work, but the layout of the pins/wires on the oposite side seem to be slightly different to the diagram in the above link, should it work? Assuming it doesn't I have simply built myself one as per the diagram in the guide so I have both to try. I then follow the instructions for FTP via the link below
My question would be, do I have to undo all of the stuff in that guide that has to be done to get FTP working (number 279) to get my laptop back to normal? Or do the changes you have to make to your network card not effect your laptops abillity to access the net?
------
Last question, When I burn and use AID how do you then run CHIMP? The chimp files I got are simply 5 unrecognised files on my pc for the moment, will the disc recognise the files? I assume the program will be able to look for program files, so does it matter where I put them on the xbox hdd?
Really apologise for all the questions guys, thanks again for your help

No probs on the questions, thats what we are here for!
Ok, so yes it all sounds ok, on the FTP question. Once you get it all said and done, you need to go back into your network settings on the computer and change them back to automatically obtain and IP address and DNS Server Address.
For CHIMP, you use AID to install CHIMP onto your XBOX, as AID does nothing more than install apps/dashboards for you, but try getting it all to work without using AID, its a PITA!!! Anyway, after you install CHIMP from the AID CD/DVD, you just go to you applications section on the XBOX dashboard and run CHIMP.

Cheers dude, I appreciate it. Problem for me with CHIMP is that I have what looks like a version 1.6 xbox, and so I have no idea how I will swap the HDD now. it was suggested that I use Xboxhdm instead but that looks about as complicated!
And hey, how can I do this without using AID? It sounds pretty complicated to get that burned to disc too, but I do have the files and manual so I should be ok.
So your saying if I connect the xbox to my laptop via the crossover cable thats it? I just have to d1ck around with the ip addresses etc as per the guide? Coool, thats good news at least!
