Ok I back tracked through the install guide and the video Wes posted and figured out where I went wrong. Its all up and running now, I did an Eeprom and MS dash backup and installed the dual boot mod. I am now able to play phantom dust! HOOORAH!!

So now I am going to read through and try out the FTP instructions so I can move the backups to my laptop. I assume I simply copy then and don't actually MOVE them entirely right?

Also you mention installing CHIMP and Telnet, but I was under the impression Chimp didn't work with xbox version 1.6? and what the heck is Telnet??

**EDIT**

Ok so I got the FlashFXP working on my laptop and got connected to my xbox via FTP!! SWEET!! Ok so now I assume all I need to do is back up my Eeprom and msdash to my laptop right?

Now all I need to do is work out how to get aid burnt to disc.

Also, bud can you just clarify what would be best to download from the following site? I can't remember if it was you or WES who suggested running this software for FTP but I'd like one that doesn't have a 30 day trial lol.

Thanks guys, so far so good!!

The chimp guide has a link near the bottom for a 1.6 that should fill you in on the telnet, its something like FTP.

As for an ftp that wont have a 30 try it timer you can try cute ftp. Wink

Yeah see I read the whole CHIMP 1.6 guide and it made no sense to me at all, I will have another read through and see where I get to. I assume you have to have an FTP connection up and running and AID and CHIMP all done too correct?

Right so I have burned an updated iso of AID to disc and installed CHIMP, I used the version from the AID disc. I have downloaded and installed Total Commander and am ready to go with the top off my xbox, Y power splitter in place and my ftp connection up.

I just wanted to confirm what I have to do with my Eeprom before going forward, I did a backup when installing SID, I didn't change its location so I assume its all the stuff in the e drive under "backup" Do I just copy that folders contents to my laptop? Do you have to backup the eeprom off your xbox?

I also had an idea. Can I not simply take an image of my xbox harddrive using acronis and then move it to my new hdd using that? Wouldn't that work? I might try it. Cheers guys

ok, apologies for the late reply.

Chimp wont work properly due to the video chip in your v1.6 box - Normally you would be presented with a nice GUI to select the options from, things are a little different on your xbox.
Now you have your FTP client up and running you`re familiar with changing the IP address of your PC and xbox - Change the IP of your xbox to 192.168.0.4 then change your PC one to 192.168.0.1 (you can test the connection is sound by trying to connect via FTP) If everythings connecting ok, close your FTP program and open up a command prompt (Start -> Run -> cmd) - run Chimp on your xbox, hook up your new drive and type, in the cmd window telnet 192.168.0.3 you should now see something displayed on your PC, follow the remainder of the v1.6 Chimp guide to clone your hard drive.

*Locate your Eeprom backup via FTP prior to all this and copy it to your PC (you wont move it, just drag the file to your PC window in Total Commander) - im not sure of its location on your xbox, could be under E/backup or possibly in E/UDATA. (the file you want is eeprom.bin)

** The telnet instructions above are for WinXP - if you are running Vista or Win7 you may need to enable Telnet as its not installed by default start -> control panel -> programs -> (on the left) turn windows features on/off -> checkbox, Telnet

cool thanks very much for clarifying mate, no trouble! Ok so I'm gonna have a look for the Eeprom, but I'm still a little hazy about what to look for, does it have an obvious name etc? Is it just one file or a folder full of contents?

And the only other thing I wanted to ask was, when you say connect your new hdd, I assume I just have to follow the instructions from the usual chimp faq, ie: connect it to the xbox power supply via the y splitter, have the ide slightly loose from the xbox dvd drive, then when I'm in chimp, remove the cable from the back on the dvd drive and plug it into the new hdd drive correct?

Did anyone see my comment about Acronis?? I use it in my office to take complete images of hdd's. Basically we use dell laptops, we normally have a lot of the same model so the easiest way to back up laptops is take an image using acronis, you can then restore that image to any other laptop hdd, plug it into the same model laptop and it will be the exact same machine/window instance with the same drivers etc. And you can even do it with larger hdd's, you just extend the partition via the cmd line. Anyone ever tried this when trying to change hdds? I may give it a go myself just to test it. you need a SATA/IDE - USB converter with standalone power supply which thankfully I have!! Let me know what you guys think

I will let you know how I get on

The back up eeprom file is called eeprom.bin - it could be in the backup folder, im unsure.

you have the right idea on hooking up the new drive, just follow the instructions on the Chimp v1.6 guide.

I dont think your imaging software would work, i dont know if itll copy the FATX partition table correctly - also, i imagine the hard drive would need unlocking (dont unlock it) before you could take an image of it - i say dont unlock it because you wont be able to lock it again, without possibly xboxhdm or a temporary modchip install. Stick with Chimp, its tried and tested and pretty simple.

ok so I found and copied the eeprom.bin file. Problem now is that I can't connect to telnet 192.168.0.3, it just keeps saying it can't connect. My ftp connection worked and I got chimp running and hooked up the new hdd but the connection just kept on failing. My xbox ip is 192.168.1.105, does that effect it? The guy who wrote the chimp for 1.6 did say ANYTHING above 192.168.1.104. Anyway also I have chimp 2.4, is that the wrong version to use? thanks

Your IP addresses aren`t in the same range, change the PC one to 192.168.0.1 (You will be able to telnet by changing the PC one to 192.168.0.1 because Chimp uses 192.168.0.3 - if you want to FTP you will have to change the xbox one to 192.168.0.4)

Ok I did everything perfectly correct so far but when I connect my xbox back up, swap the hdd's, mark the new one back to master, connect everything back up, I get an error 05 green screen telling me I need service or something. What could be wrong? I followed all the steps using the telnet/chimp guide and it all went fine. Any ideas?

Error 5 means the hard drive isnt locked.

Are you using the Chimp tut and correctly following from step 9 onwards ?

There is the possibility that the hard drive you have cant be locked, is it on the hard drive compatability list : http://xboxdrives.x-pec.com/?p=list

Yeah mate, as far as I know yes, just had a look at my printed guide and for some reason its missing the point where it says "Repeat steps 2-7 but this time instead of C press down to E and press enter" so I will try again shortly! Hopefully thats what went wrong. Cheers dude

"EDIT"

I'm still having problems with this, Do I have to unlock the drive seeing as I locked it as part of the procedure the first time? I'm doing it all now, for both partitions, the guide says to repeat steps 2-7 for both partitions but surely I shouldn't be wiping it again at step 3 should I??

Either way, I've tried several times now, remembering to change the new one back from Slave to Master everytime etc etc. Still no joy. Is it possible the HDD doesn't work with this CHIMP tool? The HDD was fine for my old PC for a long time but still doesn't want to work

"2nd EDIT"

Ok I've done a bit of thinking and reckon that the hdd probably is now locked seeing as part of the original proceedure was to lock it at the end. But as I hadn't copied over partition e I'm pretty sure thats why it went wrong. So now if I want to try again to I need to unlock it? And can someone clarify the chimp instructions to go back and do steps 2-7 again for partition e? Because one of the steps is (as far as i can tell from the way its written) to wipe the drive. But why would you want to wipe it if you've just copied over the contents of the C Partition? Cheers guys

Hey guys, just checking up, I really do need an update on this one going into the weekend as I will only get tomorrow and Sunday morning to perform any work on it. I have re formatted my 160Gb IDE Drive and am going to try the procedure again as written in the guide but the following concerns me greatly and I wanted to check with you guys that I'm doing things right:

Chimp Menu guide:
(*NOTE: use number keys, arrow keys and ENTER only!)
1. Press 1, enter - It will scan, when its done youll see exit just press enter and you will be taken back to the Main Menu.

2. Press 2, enter - it will say about to scan press enter, after scan press enter

3. Then it will Say - Choose yes will wipe out and reformat this disk Press left arrow, then Enter.

4. HD cloning from /dev/hda to /dev/hdb menus, press 1 (full disk), then Enter

5. HD cloning from /dev/hda to /dev/hdb menus, press 1 (blind), then Enter

6.NOW it will have C-drive and E-drive listed (these are the c: and e: that you are acustomed to ftp'ing to and from) Start with C, JUST PRESS ENTER.

7. IT will Say (DEVICE CLONING) THEN (CLONING FROM /dev/hda to /dev/hdb with either 50 or 51 next to them.(*Note: on the left I notice it counting up ##+0 Records in and ##+0 Records out, the ## is the number that goes up, mine goes up to about 500+1 and its done)

8.REPEAT STEPS 2-7 BUT THIS TIME INSTEAD OF C PRESS DOWN TO E AND PRESS ENTER.

Ok so step 8 greatly concerns me because one of the steps between 2 and 7 is :

3. Then it will Say - Choose yes will wipe out and reformat this disk Press left arrow, then Enter.

But surely once you've cloned the C drive over you don't want to format the drive again do you??

Anyone got any ideas? thanks

How do I tell if I was able to lock the drive or not? it looks like my drive may not be lockable, I searched for it on that list, think I need to have another look at the hdd but how do I know if it did lock or not cos I was under the impression it had. Thanks

Heres the info from the list of compatible hdds:

Hi UltraPro,

If your new HDD cannot be LOCKED then you will need to install a modchip to use this drive.

Xbox 1 Compatible Hard Drives Database
http://www.xbox-hq.com/html/modules.php?name=Xbox_HardDrives

Before attempting to use CHIMP you should make certain that the drive you are using is in fact LOCKABLE! Softmods require the hdd to be locked with the correct key before it will allow the unit to boot.

So, with all this said go and check out the exact model of your drive and be sure that it is able to be locked.. Then go from there..

eitherway, im sure you wil be able to find an older harddrive very cheap that is lockable.. By the looks of it this is your problem.
