Hi all, Sorry.... long post from a relative noob.
I recently softmodded an XBOX successfully and have the Unleash-X dashboard with XBMC running as an app. I wish I had discovered XBMC long ago.... what a fantastic app.
I just bought my second used XBOX. I was told that this one had a mod chip already. Upon booting up, after a couple of seconds of the MS XBOX splash screen it went straight to (I think a very old version) of XBMC installed with only PMIII skin.
I could ftp into the box with Windows 7 Explorer, but I could not find my shared network drives that I stream my media from. Perhaps its due to my shares being on a Windows 7 machine and this box being a very old version of XBMC.... I'm not really sure.
So I was thinking I should update XBMC before wasting more time trying to get the network to see the shares. Because I was successful with my softmodded XBOX I thought I would install the same UnleashX dash with XBMC as an App since it was running well on my softmodded box. I wasnt really sure how to safely do that because the directory structure seemed strange (definitely different to my softmodded box), and I was very nervous of screwing things up completely.
The directory structure was (perhaps this will help identify the original setup):
C directories: audio ; fonts; f0nts; SID; XBMC; xboxdashdata:185ead00; xodash;
C root files: evoxdash.xbe; msdash xbe; Xbox Book.xtf; Xbox.xtf; xboxdash.xbe
E directories: apps; Backup; backups; cache; dashboard; emus; games; TDATA; UDATA
I took the advice of a well meaning forum member to use AID to update get a fresh install of unleashx/xbmc, since it seemed that there was little risk changing files/folder with a mod chip.
After burning AID, I booted with it then did a backup the EEPROM, also the C to E drive, then a 1-click install of the UnleashX desktop. Everything seemed to go OK. Rebooted as instructed then got a Disk Not Recognised message. I removed the AID disk and the system went straight into the MS dash. The MS dash is all I can get now.
I have tried ejecting/inserting the AID disk. Booting by means of switching off/on, even pulling the power for a few seconds. Still no luck. I always get the disk not recognised error. I have tried making the following disks:
DVD Maxell+RW: Standard AID ISO
DVD Maxell+RW: AID ISO plus 1GB Dummy file
DVD Verbatum-R: Standard AID ISO
DVD Verbatum+R: AID ISO plus 1GB Dummy File plus Addon.XBMC.Scripts
CD Ridata-R: Stadard AID ISO
All of them give me the disc not recognised error.
I tried to ftp into the box ... no luck. I set the IP manually, but I dont know if there is a id/password.... xbox:xbox doesnt work.
So, I am not an experienced user but I started wondering..... "Was there actually a mod chip to begin with?" I opened the box up and cant find any obvious evidence of a mod chip. They are normally installed (looking from the front, top down) on the left hand side of the mother board close to the IDE cable right?
Have I inadvertantly reverted what was actually a softmodded xbox back to factory state, and is there anything I can do to revert the situation. I dont have the memory card save game hack, but I did back up the C drive to E before using the AID disk.
Looks like I am up the creek without a paddle. Getting desperate now. I hope things arent fubar. Could I buy an Action Replay memory card with a save game hack and softmod it all over again from scratch, or is the a quicker, easier, cheaper solution?
I know, its a loooooong post. Sorry. I just didnt want to leave out potentially important detains.

If you want us to take a look at the board, take a picture of it and we can tell you if it's chipped or not.
Since the C:\ had an SID folder on it I'm going with that it is a softmodded xbox. To get it back to a modded state your going to have to resoftmod it if you can't boot up to AID. _________________

Yeh it sounds like your xbox was softmodded and not modchipped but we can take a look at any pics if you want.. Eitherway, worst case is you will need to remod it with a softmod..
Grab the latest Softmod Installer Deluxe or AIDeluxe with update packs and use them. As long as you have a memory card and a original games like splintercell or Mechassault etc you wont have any probs..
If you need help with documentation on Auto Installer Deluxe or anything else check out the official site on the HQ's here:
