Does anyone know where I can find info or a tutorial for the adding of chips for an increase in RAM by 64 MB? _________________ ---JAESONX5---

What I wonder would the difficulties of this project be? I suppose the chips would have to be the same from one circuitboard to another, wouldn't they? The revision of the chip-supplying Xbox would have to be the same as the chip-recieving Xbox. I haven't found anything much in the forums or tutorial sections pertaining to this idea. Something should be there, though, as I believe having those two footprints on the motherboards for an extra 64 MB of RAM were used by the original xbox development teams. _________________ ---JAESONX5---

I have tried to do this before and ended up giving up because of the annoyance. I ended up breaking the pins off one chip I was trying to get off an old board so I just gave up. Not for the faint of heart thats for sure. _________________

I agree with darth. This project is super intensive.
I considered doing it myself, but found very quickly you almost need a specialist soldering gun.
I pretty much assumed only an engineer with equipment (from work) would be able to perform it.
Good luck! _________________ With knowledge, comes great power.

I already have a xbox 1 with extended memory and it kicks ass with mame and other emulators..
The XBOX i have is named a DREAMX and was a custom made box developed and sold on the net.. I had the opportunity to review it sometime ago.. If you don't want to risk doing your own ram upgrade (which would be a nightmare for me), id look into a DREAMX if they are still available.

Interesting review conclusion in the comparison test:
Conclusion
The DreamX is definitely an impressive piece of kit, but not with respect to gaming. I was unable to find any games which performed differently whilst in turbo mode.
No change in gaming. It also indicates some glitching for games, which tells me it really isn't a good thing. Xbox game developers had always coded with the 64mb RAM, because that is what Xbox was. Noone would have coded with 128mb in mind, because it is an aftermarket mod. Who knew it would happen?
The only thing I can see from the DreamX, is an Xbox as a server (Linux). Also the ability to play a MAME or similar type of emulator, which requires faster CPU rates.
PS - Thanks for the great info links hobbs! Very informative.[/i] _________________ With knowledge, comes great power.

I've always wanted to do this mod myself, but the delicateness needed to perform to task was enough to turn me away from it. So, Hobbs, where do you think I could get e DreamX and how much was yours? _________________

Go on ebay or do a google search.
I believe someone stated $500.
I'll tell you that the cost you find is not worth it.

I've been looking around for one of these, but haven't had any luck. I have found tons of pics though. I would like to possibly buy one if all the kinks have been worked out like shown in Hobbs links and the price is decent. _________________

Best advice I can give is just keep checking ebay and craigslist. They might not come on too often so you might have wait a long time to find one. _________________

if you guys were in Canada, I'd say ship me two xbox's and I'd do it for you. No, you do not need any special equipment as other's have stated, I have done two for myself just using a soldering pencil. It is not for novice soldering experience. Also remember you cannot do the upgrade on v1.6 xbox's either. I do have to admit it took me 5 hours from start to finish to do ONE console, so the price would be fair, but not cheap. The only real advantage to the upgrade is for MAME,Linux or XBMC when steaming videos or music from URL's, but normal playback will not improve, HD video is not smoother(thats a cpu upgrade which I don't do), and regular gameplay is not better.
Here's my advice
HD video - get a 360 and stream your hd-wmv vid's
better gameplay with less shutter in high res games, upgrade your ATA cable to an 80 pin, and a 8164 dvd drive modded and a new hd.
Oh the options and upgrades....how far are you willing to go. I'd did it all and it isn't cheap in the end.
500gb drive -$100 CAD
dvd drive - $40 CAD, modded it myself
ata133 cable - $5 CAD
mem upgrade $60 CAD - destroyed another console to do it
80mm LED fan - $5 CAD
LED game ports - $5 CAD - did it myself
Plus the cost of the console - $60 CAD
so there's $275 bucks, plus rgb cables, dvd playback kit and two more controllers.
Is it really worth it???
