I can FTP to my xbox to watch divx movies but I sometimes get disks from a mate.
These divx disc are not recognised by my xbox can i ftp a divx codec onto my xbox or put something like media player classic onto my box to watch the disks
If i can which partion should it go in
I have a modded box

So, if I understand the question right, you just need a program that can read and play DivX files from your XBOX?
Try VLC (videolan.org) - I've been using that on linux machines for years, in my opinion, the VERY BEST codec variety support. But I'm very new to the Xbox-PC thing, all my experience simply comes from being an avid Linux user and server administrator.

That would work but not sure where to put it to allow it to work when i put a disc in the drive

Download Auto Installer Deluxe http://www.aidtracker.com/ and use it
to install xbox media centre to `C` as your main dash, or to `E` as an app. _________________

xbox drives are a bit fussy about what media they read, DVD-R are your best bet, but thats not to say it`ll read all DVD-R`s
