So, if I understand the question right, you just need a program that can read and play DivX files from your XBOX?
Try VLC (videolan.org) - I've been using that on linux machines for years, in my opinion, the VERY BEST codec variety support. But I'm very new to the Xbox-PC thing, all my experience simply comes from being an avid Linux user and server administrator.

You have a modded xbox, what dashboard are you running ?

Why not load XBMC as a dash or application ? http://xbmc.org/

Download Auto Installer Deluxe http://www.aidtracker.com/ and use it
to install xbox media centre to `C` as your main dash, or to `E` as an app.

I have done that and have xbmc installed but when i put a DVD-R into my drive with divx movies on it it will not read it

I use xbmc to watch the films i ftp to my box

I used AID to get my box going again but will not play divx disk.

I am sure that XBMC is in E as an app which is where i ftp my films to

Anything i can try to check all ok with my AID install

I am using the blackbolt elite dash quite like it used to use the big X but this seems easier

Is the AID disc burned on the same brand of media as the Divx files ?
xbox drives are a bit fussy about what media they read, DVD-R are your best bet, but thats not to say it`ll read all DVD-R`s
check out the compatibility list :
