I need to read more!
I just read the TDK DVD+RW disc I was using and the Maxell DVD-R I was using, and neither one of them have been tested, or are compatible with my Samsung drive.

Now, I just need to fix my DVD-ROM problem, and get new discs. Very Happy

he is not trying to swap Hard drives, he is going to swap DVD drives which are interchangeable. but I don't think anything is wrong with it. I think a he has a jumper pin in the wrong place on the hard drive I just checked three Xbox Hard drives that i have and they are on cable select. so check your jumper pin on the HD and try to boot a game, then try swapping DVD drives and try to boot a game. to save your current xbox it has to be bootable. are there any lights on the DVD eject button flashing or solid green, orange, red? if it is softmodded like mine when you power it on useing the dvd eject it boots to the stock MS dash board. but in this case it will go to black screen with no error codes, Just black. but if you slap your mech assult in it will boot the game up. then you can redo the softmod.

I have my jumper on the far right hand side of the pins.
Here's a pic to clear it up (I've lost a computer to not making things clear). No lights are changing. My XBMC dash was set to cycle the LED's color, but it's staying green.

I can post pictures/videos of my problem if it'll help.

Due to the fact that you have screwed the dashboard .xbe and cant boot either burned media or original games, you have a couple of options.
Go with the Eeprom Reader & xboxhdm to rebuild your stock hard drive, or Get yourself a solderless mod chip, fix it in, boot the AID disk then re-softmod your xbox, then take out the mod chip and use it on your box with the `physically damaged HDD`

Yeah, I'm trying the less costly way, but if worse comes to worse, I may have to.

that's a good sign that the light comes on green. did you power up with the power button or the dvd eject? the pic you posted was great if it is a western digital then that is cable select. have you found your copy of mech assault.
place it in the dvd tray and only using the eject button close the tray and listen to see if it spins up. if it spins up that's a good sign. cycle it ten or so attempts to see if it will boot to the game. if it does you know what to do. if not and eeprom reader is cheap to make Probably under $15.00 dollars and the tut that is on Llama's site will show you how to make it. I found that powering it was a bit buggy but when I got it right it worked great. then you read the eeprom and save it to your PC using XBHDMKR you may as well put a big one back in it like 250 GB or 300 GB now if it already has a larger HD that's cool ( question if it does have a Larger HD where is the Original 8gb HD ) if you have the stock HD laying around it will boot right up) then you can get the eeprom info from it. Just a thought Hope it helps. C jack

you said you had another xbox with a known bad HD. why not practice on it. make the eeprom reader read its eeprom and build it a new HD and with the knowledge you gained then jump into this one and when your done you will have two Xboxes C jack

I booted the Xbox with the power button. The disc does spin, and the laser sounds like its moving, but it just can't seem to read the disc. To clear things up on what I did before:

When the original DVD-ROM drive wouldn't boot anything, I switched the drive with one of my old Xbox DVD-ROMs. That drive was already opened from my last expedition into my old Xbox. That didn't boot the game either, so I replaced it again with the original drive so I wouldn't cause any other problems.

I'm going to try booting the Xbox using just the 'Eject' button and loading the disc before it gets too far into the loading phase 'thingy' Wink!

Okay, the disc spins up and the laser is moving (I can't see it, I haven't opened this drive, and It's still mounted on the HDD/DVD-ROM chassis, along with the HDD), like it wants to start up, but it skips the entire game loading, and goes to the blank screen.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but if the DVD-ROM had an error, or wasn't being read correctly wouldn't I get error 11 or 12? Also, if the IDE cables aren't secure, wouldn't I get error 09?

(I'm going to try booting the Xbox using just the 'Eject' button and loading the disc before it gets too far into the loading phase 'thingy) this is the way push eject power up place disk in push eject close and play. try several times using only eject. does it have a stock HD. if not you may as well put in a big one when you build your eeprom reader.

I have the stock HDD inside of the Xbox now, and I had a 120 GB HDD on hand, but it failed on me too.

where did the 120 come from? was it modded for your xbox. HDs are not switchable or was it done for the other xbox. the reason I ask is because if it was made for your xbox then either you or who ever made it may still have the eeprom files on their pc?

The 120GB was just one I had laying around, it was never used for the Xbox, although, not knowing what it would take to put it into the Xbox I really didn't go through with it. Then it failed, and it won't spin now, so I just gave up on that.

Well I won't give up if you won't. I know it can be fixed, its just to bad you don't live down the street, I have made two eeprom readers and it is fairly easy, then download Ponyprog 2000 which is the software that is uses to read and write to the eeprom. then use XBHDmaker and your pc to make a new HD but you will still need a copy of someones C: and E: drive folders I have two 1.6 xboxs and I will send you mine if I have to. with xbhdmaker you have the option of rebuilding only the C: drive which is Probably all you need. on your stock HD, but as I said before I would slap as big a HD that would go in there. I have six xboxes five soft modded and one chipped with the xenium chip. One in the living room, one in the play room, and one each in a bedroom. they all have larger HDs I think my biggest is a 250. they are all on my home network and use XBMC to access my PC where I have 800GB of storage for movies. and we can either have a self contained LAN party or watch movies from the PC . and remember those DVD drives are worth 25.00 bucks apiece on eBay. and the power supply probably another 25.00 apiece on eBay Hell I bet the motherboard and HD pair that's F**ked Up would bring 25.00 so you probably sell all your stuff then go down to the local pawn shop and pick you a nice green Halo addition for about 75.00 and start over. but the next time you must be sure before you even play it one time that you back the EEPROM, THE C, AND THE E. UP to your PC so that this will be easier to fix the next time. CaptainHighJack Later dude.

Well, I have wiring and that's just about it. None of the diodes, resistors, 9-pin connector, etc. that are needed to make the eeprom reader. I'm getting the directions from here to make it.

If there's an easier way, I'm all ears! Smile

that is the only way I know. if you want to pay shipping both ways from VA to MO and back I will try to fix it for you with no Charge and no Guarantees but you would miss out on the excitement of building your own eeprom reader. How are your soldering skills? it is just basic soldering. if I can do it anybody can. you might be able to go to the local radio shack and ask around somebody there may be able to solder you up one. did you mod your box or did someone do it for you? there is a certain amount of skill and aptitude to locate, download, and apply information from the internet. when it is unknown it is an exciting challenge when it is known it is boring. you have choices to make, cannibalize both of your Xbox systems and sell them on ebay, take the money and buy one from the pawn shop and start over. find some else to try to fix it. or try to fix it yourself with the help of the people on this and many other sites.
