Does anyone here know how to install Linux as an App accessible by UnleashX on the Xbox? I honestly don't know what files to download, where to put thing, or if this is even possible. I have seen tutorials (including one saying, incorrectly, that it was about running Linux as an app) about installing it as a new OS on your Xbox, deleting everything else, but that is definitely not what I want. UnleashX does everything an Xbox OS needs to do (and more), but there a certain things I need Linux for. Well, ideally Windows XP, but that's not going to happen. So is it possible to (and how do you) run Linux as an App for the Xbox via UnleashX. _________________ Rebuilt Source Engine

There is a few apps that run linux
Linksboks
gentoox
xdsl
But I think you will find it too slow to be useful. I messed with it for over a month and read/talked on many forums to find no way to make it faster w/o adding RAM to my xbox.

Even if it's slow, I still want to try it. Xebian is the distro I'll try. I just extract dist-1.1.4-xbox.tar.gz until I get an .iso file, then extract all the files out of it and burn all those files to a CD-R, right?
BTW, I heard most people have extensive trouble with CD-Rs and that for any disk, they have to put it in Xbox disk format. My CD-Rs run perfectly, and I just burn the files from the .iso straight to the disk instead of burning the disk image. Am I misunderstanding people's problems, or am I just lucky in this case? I'm using UnleashX, BTW.
EDIT: I hit a brick wall. Everything's going fine, except I can't run default.xbe. I click on it a million times, but it refuses to even try to open. That was just cheating. The Xbox is dealing from the bottom of the deck, and I haven't the foggiest what I'm supposed to do. Am I supposed to burn the disk image to get a boot sector? Am I supposed to go to Microsoft and point a flamboyantly-orange-tipped gun at Bill Gates' face or something? What? I've got a killer migraine from all this nonsense. I need to sleep. Please, someone tell me what to do.
Thanks in advance. _________________ Rebuilt Source Engine

CD-R media sucks on my Xbox, but for whatever reason linux live cds seem to work fine with it. I don't know what you are trying to do exactly, because if you want to install linux as an app you could have FTPd everything in. I've never done it that way, but I know it can be done. I'm sure theres a tut here somewhere on it. Oh and make sure you are using an actual microsoft controller, because the aftermarket controllers that I have never seem to work in linux.

It depends on your DVD drive if it will read cdr. So you night have a brand of drive that can read cdr. As post above try a different controller in xbox. I had one that worked with booting linux and one that would cause it to hang. So try that if you have more then one controller.

It's not that it's causing it to hang, it's not executing it at all. I never use third party controllers, after the MadCatz controller I had. I do use MadCatz memory cards, though. Some say they're lesser quality, but the only reason I got an official Microsoft one was to softmod my xbox.
EDIT: I've gotten the Xebian Live CD to work. Unfortunately, I don't know how to access the Linux equivalent of explorer.exe, though I did figure out that restart means nothing and off means restart. Odd. Odder, all I can do is bring up eyes. How would I go about accessing Ideas for Linux and the ROMs? I have them on another disk, and I'm unsure as to what I should do. Do I put the files on my E:\ drive? Then how would I go about running Ideas? _________________ Rebuilt Source Engine

I don't know how familiar you are with linux, i run it myself but i'm still kind of a noob...i've never used xebian or debian so i'm not totally familiar with it. what is it doing, booting to a shell or what? It sounds like what your saying is that it isn't booting to a gui? if so it isn't hard to start one, but i don't think the virtual keyboard is working until you get into the gui. i don't know why it wouldn't boot all the way through unless thats the way that particular distro is set up, i.e., built without a graphical interface. i would try two things. first get another distro like xdsl, its small and you can download it fast. see if that works. if it doesn't, then its a problem with the discs you're using. if it does boot, then try xebian again with a keyboard, if you are booting to a shell. then we can try to start a graphical interface on it.

It's booting now, it's just my n00bity with Linux. It does have a GUI, but apparently no "folders". I'm screwed if it expects me to use the command prompt on my not high-definition television with only a virtual keyboard application. Does anyone know of a Linux for Xbox package close to Windows? I'll try xDSL soon, and post what happens. To summarize, I need Linux for Xbox with GUI folder navigation.

No, can't say that I know of any xbox linux distros that are similar to windows. And thank god for that, I have enough problems on my xbox without putting like windows on it.
