Hi im new to this but catch on easy have modded my phone with the help of other site like this fine one if you have the time ....
Would i softmod my box with any dashboard and the be able to boot a disc of of linux to surf web and do other things like e-mail?
Is there a way to view youtube and other flash based video site on xbox with soft mod. maybe with media center dashboard???

Read up on softmod that is the trick. If you know someone with a modded xbox its a breeze because they can put the EXPLOIT (save) on a memory card and use the disk that goes with that save and its a walk through. Just use a up to date softmod so it makes it dummy proof. If you dont have a friend look into hot swap or like me I bought a USB/controller plug so I could plug a usb stick into the controller port and my xbox saw it as a Memory card.
You want to install XBMC as a dash. Its the best and has the most features. Plus is updated at least once a month with new features and skins.
I tried the surfing the web with Linux on my xbox and its possible but MANY draw backs. Biggest being low RAM on the xbox which causes surfing to be VERY SLOW. I tried many ways around it and could get it to work but all being to slow to make worth your time.
There is MANY scripts that XBMC offers and people continue to make. One of the biggest is Youtube. It goes right on the web site and has search features so you can watch your favorite videos right on your TV.
You came to the best place to get help. No one will flame you unless you act like a total jerk. So read 1st and read again so you get some answers on your own so you dont ask 100 question that are all over forums and FAQ. But you will find many people will help and/or direct you where to find the answers.
Once you mod your Xbox you will wonder how you lived w/o it.

It is definitely possible to do what you are asking. Check out this vid on youtube to give you an idea. He mentions he can view youtube and I am sure it's like the previous post said, done via XBMC. XBMC is awesome. Although I have never had much time to d1ck around with that program I am promising myself that I will take some time in the near future.

You can boot to linux and surf online with the xbox, but it sucks. I've done it with XDSL quite a bit, thinking that maybe it would be fast because its small and maybe efficient, but I think the lack of memory is what is killing it. I would make a live disc, boot it up and try it a few times, and if it seems to work okay do a loopback install so that you can just start linux from whatever dashboard you are running. If you want to just check email with it, it would work fine for that, as long as you hook up a keyboard to it. It does fine watching youtube videos.
