I got a broken xobox from a friend who was gonna throw it away. It gives a code 07 after about 30 seconds of just the hanging x. You can hear the HDD clicking and trying to work. I tried to replace the IDE cable but it didn't help anything. The xobox was never modified and I have no eeprom files to build a new HDD. From what I have read the only way to install a new HDD at this point is to have a chip installed, is this correct?

Thanx for the reply as usual wes. I was under the impression that inorder for the hot swap to work you had to have a backup of the eeprom file on the xboxhd disc in order for the hd to lock and unlock?
Anyways, I am fimiliar with the hotswap. So I just hook up the new hdd run xboxhd and plug the new drive in the xbox? Thanx again for your expert help man.

Yeah you just need to do that step ware you hook the PC ide to the xbox mobo so it can pull the eeprom from the eeprom chip directly and you should be good to go.

Wow! I didn't know I could do that!
And I can use xboxhd to extract the eeprom file needed?
I am not familiar with this process, where can I read up on this?

Actually, you cannot hotswap without having your eeprom on the hdd because hot swapping is used to unlock the locked hdd in a certain time frame. I have performed many a hotswaps and i know for a fact the driev must have an eeprom on it and be locked.
Short run down of why you would hotswap and what it does:
1st, you would perform a hotswap if you muck up your hdd by deleting a needed file or something to that effect after a softmod. This does not matter with a hardmod.
2nd, The hotswap unlocks your hdd untill the xbox is powered off, and in this time frame you hook it to your pc to copy new files to it, when your done and power down the machine, it will be locked again. But the new files and new setup will still be on the HDD fixing your problem.
If the drive is not locked with your xbox, then why hotswap?
Also, i just read something i wish i would have read b4 correcting you. I did NOT know you could hook your PC to the mobo and retreave the Eeprom. If you would be kind to give me a link i will love you forever! _________________ Hotswap Tutorial|FTP Tutorial|HyperX Flashing Tutorial

Well I have done some looking around and can't find anything on this.
Looks like my only other options is to get a chip or an eeprom reader/writer.
Wes, please enlighten us on this. It makes sense you could access the eeprom info via the ide cable but there must be a program or disc that must be run to accomplish this.

All apologizes guys, looks like my xbox hdm disk had the eeprom on it even though i don't recall putting it on there.
Just use the hot swap to rebuild the drive and if it wont then a chip would be the best thing you can do since its the worlds best eeprom reader.
Sorry to get your hopes up but i really had no idea that the eeprom to my xbox was in the folder.
Good job keeping me in check HypnotiX. LOL

No worries man, I appreciate your help.
And thanx HypnotiX for clearing things up, I knew that eeprom file was a must have.
I guess I'm in the market for a modchip!
Any suggestions on an affordable chip that is easy to install?
Also I would rather not have a permanent chip as I will probably try to flip this xbox in the future.
Plus it would be nice to have if I ever get into this bind again.
Thanx again guys!

Shoot for the X-2.6 lite with a solderless adapter if you can find one.
