I have a softmodded xbox (Krazie's Ndure via Splinter Cell) running XBMC as the main dash. The dvd drive recently died, and I was using it as my main dvd player in my HT. So, I'd like to replace the dvd drive... What kind of drive can I use? Now that it's modded, can I use any drive that will fit? Or do I still need to use the specific OEM models (philips, samsung, etc.) which are very hard to find. FYI, I'm not using this for games at all... just XBMC.
Thanks, any info is greatly appreciated! I JUST got this thing working and XBMC installed and totally love it, and now this!
At first I couldn't even boot (error #12). So I pulled it from my HT cabinet down to my workbench, opened it up and started checking connections and all. Took it all appart, pulled the IDE and power cables, and then reassembled. Hooray! It worked again. For like 5 minutes. It booted up fine on my little test tv, so I reassembled, closed the case, brought it upstairs to the HT, and ... error 12 again. This time I couldn't get it back. So I swapped the IDE cable with one from a spare-parts xbox I have. No luck. So I swapped the dvd drive with the spare's. This time it booted. And it still boots just fine. The problem is, this drive from my spare xbox, is toast too... won't read any discs. At least I can still boot it and stream media from my PC, as an interim solution.
Again, thanks for any info on replacing the dvd drive in a soft-modded xbox!!!

Welcome to the XBOX-HQ, we hope you enjoy this and all the other HQ sites we have to offer.
Its got to be an xbox drive or you can look for one of the mods that let you use a samsung or LG drive.
Huh. Bummer. I was afraid of that. I can probably find and entire working xbox for the price of one of those dvd drives. Of course, no guarantee on the lifespan of the used xbox's drive then, but it would come with spare parts.
What about hooking up an external USB drive? I have a gameport - usb adapter I made to hook up usb jumpdrives... Would XBMC recognize the external dvd drive to play movies?
