I'm still kinda new to this, I've only done this softmod a month ago, but here's what I'm trying to do...I don't have a router, so I want to run right from the network port on the xbox into my cable modem...on the pc its just enable DHCP and plug it in...but I do that on the xbox and get nothing...there is activity between the nic and the modem, but the xbox never gets an ip...is there some reason why this wouldn't work? I have everything set right in the dash. Anybody got an idea?

You need a static IP since you have no router to assign your xbox a DHCP address.

Im guessing of course as I type this.
My DSL modems IP is 192.168.1.1 and of course its on the net with the IP it gets from my IP.
So when I want to configure my modem I just http://192.168.1.1 and then Im in.
So on my network I configured the following in my Xbox
Static IP 192.168.1.90 just because I like that number
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Gateway my modems ip which is 192.168.1.1
Dns I just grabbed my ISPs which is 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 which is Verizon.net's DNS servers.

Uh, its a Westell from Verizon. Its basically a 4 port/wireless router which they call a DSL modem. Go figure.
The Westell product you have is a modem/router or wireless adapter that is supported exclusively by Verizon.
As for the IP its the internal IP. It obviously grabs a routeable IP from the DHCP server on the ISP side.
Before the Westell I used to run everything through a HomeBrew Linux machine acting as a firewall/gateway so what I have now kinda now more or less just repeats what I used to have. 10 years of it and I often forget the rest of the world isn't the same. So I'll address any other help I attempt to offer up with that in mind. If I stray please feel free to give me a boot to the butt.
