Thats kind of a matter of opinion bro, even 2 drives of the same brand don't always act the same.
Makes it a bit hard to say which one is better then the other.
I keep a stock pile of samsung 605's laying around myself.

I don't know much about HDD's also but I just realized that Western Digital/Maxtor and Hitachi have a 10,000RPM HDD, which I wish I would have been aware of this when I got my 400gb Seagate.
10,000RPM's vs. 5400RPM's makes a BIG difference for file transfer reasons..... _________________ Support A Hard Modder!

I do believe most Industries use for Data Storage a Western Digital/Maxtor and or Hitachi due to durability of their HDD, although I have heard good thing about the others, I think it is a matter of RPM's. _________________ Support A Hard Modder!

Back to the DVD drive. I have a Hitachi-LG drive that works better than any other of my six XBOX drives. I've never had a disc it won't read. I've used cd-r, cd-rw, cd-rw data, dvd-r, dvd-rw, and dvd+rw. Again, never had a disc not work. No matter whats on it. _________________

Since Day 1, I would presume. It's in my V1.0. You don't believe me? _________________

I'll post a pic soon. It's actually Hitachi-LG and nowhere does it say Thompson. _________________

Hitachi-LG GDR-8050L DVD Drive In Xbox
>> Microsoft is now using a new DVD-ROM drive in the Xbox console. Frequent modders or people with a very recent Xbox probably already saw this new drive for some time.
The new drive is made by Hitachi and LG ('H-L'), the model is GDR-8050L. The new drive appears in some Xbox consoles manufactured since end september 2004 (Xbox v1.6/v1.6b) and the build date of the drive is September 2004 or later. The drive has a white connector cable instead of yellow and the tray looks a lot like the one on the Thomson drive but with a wider cutout. From reports on our forums the drive seems to work fine with most DVD-+R, DVD-RW and CDRW media, but fails to boot most CD-R discs.
There's a forum discussion about this new DVD-ROM drive here[forums.xbox-scene.com] where they are also trying to find the PC drive from Hitachi and/or LG that matches the hardware of this new Xbox drive. If there's such a drive the firmware from the H-L Xbox drive could be flashed on the PC-drive. This PC-drive could then be used as cheap fully working (also boot orignal Xbox discs) replacement drive, like done with the discontinued Samsung 616T PC-drive(more info).
