hi all
my xbox died a couple of days ago
i was playing a game from the HD, and suddenly out of nothing, a black screen and no more green led on the front of the xbox.
when i then pressed the on button again, nothing happened no sound no screen. the only thing that gave me some feedback was the LED of my wireless connector that blinks if it is searching for a connection, but when i release the on button this led dies too. Same for the open button.
i then thought it might be a cpu overheat protection, but when i tried again in the morning, same result.....
today i tried again in complete silence, and i hear a really soft tick in the body of the xbox.
i then unscrewed the xbox because i thought it might be the fan having trouble starting up, but that was not the case. but i got the indication the sound came from the upper right corner, where the power supplie cable is attached. (maybe due to a shortcut?)
so any1 got a suggestion? is this fixable, or should i buy another second hand xbox for 40 euro?
any help is greatly appreciated!

Iam not sure but usually HDD's make that kind of noise, when you first start your Console the noise's that usually come from there are the DVD/CD Player then maybe the HDD warming-up that should be the order that they are set-up from your Mobo. is that how they are working?
And like I said HDD usually make a ticking noise........ _________________ Support A Hard Modder!

If it is you HDD don't worrie there is a way to fix this there is a Mobo on your HDD if you can find out what model you have you can look on ebay and match a new Mobo instead of reconfiguring a new HDD. or better yet hang around may someone else here can offer some better advise. _________________ Support A Hard Modder!

i had the same problem except i had mine apart for some reason and then i put it back together and got the same thing you're having...i just got another used box b/c by the time you fixed whatever it is causing the problem you could've got another box...and then u can keep that one for parts _________________
If you can remove the PSU (carefully - dont touch any of the components inside) and have a look at the connector where your power lead pushes into, this sometimes comes away from the board and needs to be re-soldered back into place. (It might not be broken off the psu board but you may notice small fractures arount the solder points)
AGAIN - BE CAREFUL, EVEN WITH NO POWER SOME PSU COMPONENTS CAN HOLD CHARGE _________________

yea, i know , tell me about it, i was workign on mine without the cover open and the power cable hooked up to the xbox, and i touched the giant metal plate, that says warning high voltage by accident, and i got my as shocked., not like electrified but more of a static shock, anyway there's a fuse located on the psu near the end of the psu, the end closes to the front panel, u can replace the fuse and it should work, usually they go out first, to protect the psu from any damage., and the ticking noise sounds like a discharge of the negative atoms of the electricity reacting with the air, to create a poppign noise, so don't touch it, when it's doing that

i just had the fuse checked in a tech shop, and the guy said it was fine....
the other thing is that there are no burnmarks or whatever on the PSU, which makes locating the problem even harder
so it could be one of the other 80 components, which i have to check manualy, if it even is the PSU
i guess i just buy another xbox, and keep this one for spare parts.
but thanx for the help and feedback everybody!

i took the mainboard + cpu coolers apart, but no burnmarks there....
im glad a second hand xbox is'nt that expensive here (=< 40 euro's)
and for the final question:
could this failure be caused by the fact that i enabled the fan control script in XBMC? is this overwritten wehen playing a game?
many many thnx to all y'all guys/gals!

A fan speed change should not do that to an xbox, mine is set to keep the xbox at 100 F and its been going strong for a few years now.
Sometimes they die.

Something that I know
Someversions of the PSU had a bad soldering point on the cord connector that it would do that. There are tuts on fixing it...
Also some PSU's do go out and can be ordered online, of course you do have to know what ver your xbox is in order to get the correct one.. _________________
