Hey all,
I apologize for starting a thread about HD upgrades as I am sure you are all sick of them.
I am completely new to the XBOX modding world as of a week ago. A good friend of mine gave me some sites to use for this, and told me that the HQ was THE xbox mod authority. And, to go ahead and pay for a yearly VIP access. Here I am!
I have just softmodded an xbox, and I installed XBMC to get a feel how to install / configure dashes. I have the new AID ready to rock. My next step is to install the HD which I also have.
But anyway, I have read through the various tutorials on here and elsewhere, and it seems like the easiest one is the tutorial posted by pirrup, http://xbox-hq.com/html/xbox-tutorials-153.html.
I have backedup my C and E and eeeprom files, etc. Other than a #10 Torx wrench, I am ready to proceed. I hope to have time this week.
My question concerns the removal of my PC's HDs. Is it necessary to physically disconnect them, or can I just shut them off in the BIOS? It's probably taken me more time to type this than it would have to remove them. But my Tower case is super crowded and a pain to get to, and I would rather jam in an IDE cable end and pull out a dongle than to maneuver the pullouts of the other cables.
I would greatly appreciate any feedback on this quesiton, as well as any tips that may not be readily apparent in the tutorials. Is there in fact a "best" method for softmod HD swap?
I am freakin' psyched about getting this done.
Muchas gracias,
TEF

I'll be the first one to welcome you to the site, you've come to the right place for xbox modding! You will not be dissapointed with the V.I.P support!
Now onto your problem. To use xboxhdm to make a new hdd you do have to remove the ide cable from the hdd and plug it in to the xboxes new hdd.
If your looking for an easier way that doesn't require you to use a computer use chimp. Chimp allowes you to make a new hdd on the xbox console itself. Here is a great tut for chimp-->http://www.xbox-hq.com/html/xbox-tutorials-260.html _________________

Darth,
Thanks man! That method seems far better than anything else. I dont know how I missed it! I had read one about chimp, but I think maybe I thought it was for MODCHIPed boxes.
That's what I will try tonight, since this seems a lot better than screwing with my PC.
I guess I am curious about one point of clarification, and that still regards the PC method. You said the PC IDE drive needs to be unplugged so that the contact can be used for for NEW HDD. Does this still require the deactivation / removal of other drives, such as my SATAs?
Thanks for the quick response, I like how this is going already.

If the hdd is not on the ide i dont think that HDM will pickup on it, but its allways best to unplug all of them, just so you dont format or overwrite the erong hdd.

Man, now I cant figure out how to run apps. Im doing a clean install of XBMC and Chimp using AID, maybe when I uploaded the build I did it incorrectly.
My understanding is that AID will install stuff and it will appear on XBMC. Dont know what's going on.

EDIT: Reinstall showed my files. But when I run it, Chimp just freezes on a black and white linux copyright page.

Thanks Darth, I got that figured out.
Turns out I had gotten chimp to run already. When I run chimp it goes to a copyright page and freezes - I had that happen before, but I thought it was a different error.
This is so frustrating! Im sitting here completely ready to do the HD upgrade and these little nooby problems pop up. I am guessing it's a bios problem

See if you let it sit there for a while if it loads, sometimes things do that on the xbox. _________________

Nope, but good idea. I know I read that you need to leave CHIMP running for a long time. But ive left this on for 15 mins now and it's still frozen on the linux copyright screen.
Thanks for helping darth

Darth,
Im not sure at the moment as I am not at home.
I do know it is the version from AID 4.10.
Anyway, I've got this same query going under the "Chimp 2.4" thread, so I dont want to be taking up two threads with this.
Thanks for the help though, it's appreciated.

Hey fellas,
I went and did the Xboxhdm method for my 250 maxtor and it worked. I still havnt made the second 130 gig partition, but that's next.
I do have a question though. When I had just finished the drive, I understood that it would essentially be a clean MS Xbox drive.
When I first tried it, I had NHL 2k5 retail in the drive, and it wouldnt run. I swapped drives right there, to the original, and NHL did run. I thought it hadnt worked - although it had loaded into MS Dash. But I put the new HD back in, and all my other games worked, including splinter cell, and I did the hack.
After I did it, NHL worked fine! Is that normal, for a created hd not to play some games? I know it was in fact the HD because I did several tests / swaps with NHL.
I hope it doesnt mean that I will have errors in the future.
My other question concerns the XBMC that AID Installed. The first time I did it it had all sorts of other buttons and options on the main screen, then I reinstalled it jut now and it's the basic one. Is that a skin or something else?
Im psyched, thanks for the help guys.

Basic means you have the least addons to the dash.
As for the game not working it was most likely due to the cache somehow, even though it was a new hdd thats almost always what it is. If its working now don't worry about it. _________________

Hey,
I wasnt at all clear in my question about XBMC. I meant that I installed both from AID, from the same menu option, and didn't do anything differetnly when I installed the two. But one happened to install with the full options, and the other without them. I guess I was just wondering how to do the install selectively.
But hey! This thing rocks!!! _________________ Dash: not sure

I think you can just install the dash by itself, then you can add the apps you want from aid. _________________
