Thomson? Ack that might be your problem right there. Microsoft should be ashamed of themselves putting those pos in there! I just don't understand how your games can be pixelated and your dvd playback isn't though. I could have swore they both use the video chip. Have you tried a brand new game in that bad boy to see if that makes a diffrence? Because it has to be eithier a bad disc or bad dvd drive I would think. Being as how it is a thomson it wouldnt suprise me. But then you wouldnt have a good dvd playback if it was the dvd drive. _________________

You know there is one thing I did when cleaning the outside... before I cleaned the inside part and the dots/lines started to appear.... I cleaned out the ports... (they were REALLY DIRTY) including the video port on with a Q-Tip with alcohol. Not sure if that would have damaged anything or not. No power was to the box at the time and I did not hook up anything right away, so it should have been dry. But like before... that should have messed up the DVD video also. Very strange

Easiest way to find out if its the drive is to get another drive and put it into the xbox. _________________

If it is the drive you can either buy a new drive off ebay or you can buy a replacement laser and install it and save a drive from the depths of xbox hell lol. _________________

I've never replaced an old xbox ones myself, but i have replaced an xbox 360's laser, and it was easy. Its not too hard, just check google for some tuts on how to change it out. _________________

You know I gotta disagree on that one darth. You suggest the laser replacement alot and in reality if that doesnt work then what? Some people don't have a bunch of cash to throw around and if he buys a laser and it doesn't work then he is sol. Modore it is much better to replace the whole drive then to risk monkeying around with a laser replacement. Also why the heck would you buy a replacement laser for the biggest pos drive that xbox ever had? Much better to replace the thompson with a samsung or phillips drive. _________________

Reason i go with laser replacement is because its cheaper, and on the xbox 360 thats almost always the cause. Like i said i've never done an old xbox replacement so it was more of a suggestion than telling him to do it. _________________

Well, just tried the swapping DVD drives with my other xbox that has no issue and get the same lines and black dots. So I guess we can rule out the DVD drive as the cause of the problem for now.

It either has to be a video chip problem or a disk problem then. _________________

See that is what is so weird is his dvd playback is fine its just his game playback that is toast. Doesn't the dvd and game play through the video chip? If it was the chip the dvd playback would suck. All I can suggest now is changing the ide cable out and see if that helps. Thats the grey cable that connects the motherboard and dvd drive and hard drive. That has too be the problem. Take out the one from your other xbox and see if that works. If so you can pick one up for cheap. Let's hope it is that. _________________
