Ok let's start with what I did wrong to my poor friend's xbox.

I mangled the evoxdash.xbe and also the xboxdash.xbe trying to figure out a way to boot XBMC instead of the Slayer dash. Now I get good old error code 21. The best part is that none of the store bought games will boot (007,MA i.e.) they simply go to the error screen. I thought I had it licked when I waited out the time elapse to reset the clock, but when I boot now it will attempt to, and even fade into the clock set screen, but whamm-o, 21.

The steps I've taken:
Having successfully achieved a hotswap on MY ailing box in the past, I know enough to understand (and have read many tuto's) what my only solution is. xboxhdm. I have made many coasters burning this iso that my pc won't even consider a boot disk. DVD and CDR (my windows cd boots fine so its not a settings issue and I have used both Nero and Dvdecryptor)
I just can't get to the eeprom backup area on the hd to make the iso a boot disk I'm guessing.
This is a WD 20 gig hd that I can attach to my pc and identify it in the hardware list but Liveinfo tells me its locked and has a calculated password, the rest of the info is all 0's. I will attach the bin file I made from it if it helps.

Bare with me I have searched countless pages for answers.

Also the crappy Dell I got cheated on came without a 3 1/4" floppy, can you believe it? So I can not make a DOS boot disk or I would try those naked-boot dos prog's. I am aware of the systems version its 1.1 (figured through video chips and fan placement and power connection) but I'm unaware of its kernel.

So in short:
Bad Evoxdash and xboxdash.xbe's
Error 21
Unabble to make a bootable copy of xboxhdm v1.9 (I have followed all the tuto's I could find to a T)
Retail games will not load (dvd reader is fine)
V1.1 (4817 I'm guessing)

What I do have:
Backups of MY currently working and ftp'able Xbox with an AiD Disk
and MA game disk and exploit.

By the mercy of the gods may someone have some answers?

Hi,
As you seem familiar with xbhdm & hotswapping i suggest trying `Explorer 360.exe`, dont let the name put you off. Its not something i`ve tried so unfortunatly i cant advise you on the procedure, but if you watch this `youtube` video the resullts seem very promising :

hope this helps Smile

You're not supposed to use an outside program to make the iso theres a batch file that says make linux boot or make linux iso or something to that extent that you're supposed to click on inside the xboxhdm folder and it creates an actual boot disk. Also don't forget to change the PC's settings so it boots your cd drive first. And yeah it needs to b on a cd.

I made the cd at least 2 dozen times all without data in the the c, e. and f partitions (is it possible to backup MY xbox and use its files to to redo this box's mod?). I can't get into the hd for the backups, I also do not have the eeprom.bin on the locked hd.

The thing is the hotswap will let my pc recognize that it is a disk drive but will not produce a drive letter or display it when I explore my pc (my C: drive is partitioned to operate from the root of E:\ and C: is mainly used for storage) . My xbox with a 120 gig hd showed as a scsi CD-ROM till I used Xplorer360.exe on it, I was then able to manipulate the files on it and get it operating again.

I looked for WD driver updates but I have the most current ones. I have a WD 120 gig hd in my Pc that will not boot unless it is set to Cable Select (I tried without any other drives with Master and Slave settings on Primary IDE channels) The Hotswap will not work if the box's hd is set to the same, it HAS to be slave or master for the pc to recognize it.

I have lost a ton of sleep over this and I'm -><- this damn close!
Why will the pc not display a drive letter after it was found in hardware settings?
If I can just get this machine to boot any cd I would be fine but I think the clock reset is halting a CD from playing. The drive spins with plenty of activity is there a way around the clock reset?

What on earth am I doing wrong?

did you unhook all of your hard drives, and leave only the xbox hd? Oh, and about it not booting the cd, I had the same problem. I tried for like 3 hours to hotswap and the cd refused to boot, but it would boot the XP disc (which was pressed at a factory). I swapped my cd drive out, and BLAMO! worked perfectly... stupid P.O.S. cd drive. If you have an extra cd drive laying around, try that. I have also made many many coasters out of my now 6 xboxhdm CD's... If you don't have another drive, make a different bootable CD to see if it just won't read those cd's you're burning to before you go out and buy a new one...

Yes sir everything but the xbox hd were disconnected.

I have taken a new approach. I have an AiD disk that works fine on my box so I have decided to try a little box to box hd swapping. and no success yet.
The thing is the modded box won't boot the cd without its own hd connected.

So which is the best method for this?
I have read that if you disconnect the DVD ide you get a 10, 11, or 12 error message which should leave the drive unlocked, but it seems to power down after some length of time.

Ok so now I got a working copy of xboxhdm to properly boot on my pc. With no eeprom of course. I did a hot swap to the pc and using the dos option I can see the HD and its telling me that it is unlocked. But in the linux menu I get no recognition of a fat32 device.

Using the xboxhdm cd can I in fact change files around on the hd assuming I have done the hotswap correctly? Which option is used for this? Also Can I have left the hd in the unlocked state after trying the hotswap a number of times and not having any success?

just a thought... maybe you can use chimp to do it using your already modded xbox... I, however, have no experience with this, but it looks good if you have an already modded xbox.

I have had some luck with xboxhdm.
Got my pc torecognize the hd while I hot swapped with the pause break.
But I went into the ata prog in the dos list and by ACCIDENT froze the drive.

The cd I made was using another softmodded c:, so when I rrebuilt the partition all the files on it were wiped out. This sucks because I coulda used xbrowser and got the hd info (FUNK!) and password and could have had this thing working by now.

But as it stands I have 2 + marks in ata under S and under F. So I put the hd back in the correct box and now I get to a boot screen that is all green and says downloading live upadtes. Does this mean I have the wrong m$dash?
Also If I plug it into a hot ethernet cable will it download what it needs?
I know I srewed up but this is a first for me and I have always fixed my pc by trial and error.
So given my current status what do you guys think? Any fixing this download screen?

we,, that's further than you got before... good luck turning that xbox into a zombie xbox (back from the dead for those of you who missed the reference)... I have no clue as to why it may do that... try putting the original MS dash back on it with xboxhdm... then once you're there, you can retry the mod.

How do I know which was the original dash for this particular machine?
Because I have seen this happen before and it most definitely was the incorrect dash. Once the backups from E were restored everything was fine.

How do I determine the correct dash?

Good Lord

After about 30 hours of research and no memory card or eeprom and many failed hot swaps, I gave this machine life once again! By the way I will call this thing a "Zombie" since it has been given life again and my friendship is no longer in jeopardy (well at least my wallet) and I can happily hand him over his working box.

Here is exactly what I did to solve my problem for error 21 (I had 16 for a bit) and repair the original softmod without a working DVD drive on that xbox. Also I was right about being stuck in the "downloading live content" screen I had an incorrect version of the dash

First off I used another xbox and restored it to factory settings. Making sure I had all drives backed. Rebooted the machine and using SID I ftp's the pretty bare contents of the C: partition and only a few select save games from the TDATA and UDATA folders on the E: drive to the xboxhdm linux C: and E: folders. Made the iso and burned it to a CD-r.

After just a few attempts I was able to hotswap whit no other peripherals but my DVD-r drive on the secondary ide on my pc and was able to boot the xboxhd cd accordingly and gain access to all of the functions. I rebuilt the hd with the plain m$dash I took from my box and most importantly copied over the MA exploit as well. There is a pretty crafty prog that lets you ftp game saves to and from your box called Xbox saves manager v4.5. So once that was all said and done reattached the hd and powered down. When I restarted I did get the clock menu immediately and set it. Then looked over the save files and made sure they were all there and they were. Lastly, I popped in good old MA and loaded the "run linux" cammand and you know the rest....

So I pat myself on the back for not having a clue on how to fix this to begin with but now I am that much more prepared for this type of thing in the future. And since I have successfully modded a virgin only using the xbrowser command after the hot swpa and I put it back together in a matter of minutes.

I would also like to thank you guys for all and any info that helped me along the way. I look forward to helping others with this problem.
