Does anyone know the specs of the two fans used inside the XBox (ie: size, cfm, rpm, db, etc. or maybe a model number so I can look it up). I'm gonna be opening up my XBox to put in a larger HD and I figured I might as well consider changing the fans to quiter ones ... however, I need a starting point of some sorts in order to get the correct fans ... so I was wondering if others already have this information ... you would save me from opening the XBox up just to get this info.
Thanks,
Harry
P.S. I originally posted this question in the General Discussions forum, but I realized it's probably better suited in this forum. Sorry for the doubling.

I think there's only 1 real fan with a plug... But if it's making noise its from the amount of power it's drawing. If you have a modded dash you can change that typically in fan speed. There is a heat sink over the processor but other then that I don't think there's any other real fan in there. Unless the second heat sink has one like this. But thats the inside, haven't tested volts or anything.
(PS, that chip is a modchip so I doubt you'd see THAT in there incase you were wondering from a glance.)

Thanks for the picture ... that really helps actually. I see the back fan does have a connector (looks like three prong connector but only two wires used). So that fan should be changable ... however, I wonder what the specs are on it ... cause there's no point in buying a replacement fan if I don't know if it will be quiter.
Is the fan on the heat sink (I'm assuming that's the graphics chip fan) hardwired in? Or does it have a connector also?
As for the fan speed changing in my dash ... I was playing around with that, however, obviously you sacrifice cooling when you turn down the fan speed ... I figured if they used cheap fans that are loud to begin with, I might be able to get ones that push just as much air as these but are less noisy.
Thanks for the help so far,
Harry

It matters what version Xbox you have, I think it's either v1.1 or 1.2 they changed the heatsink fan to a big heat sink. Second, it is 3 prong, 2 used, but I don't know if there's power to the third,I think there is, and the best cooling technique I know is just get an indoor fan thats quiet and point it at the xbox with the HDD ontop of the DVD drive so the fan blows on the mb and the hdd. Otherwise, I think I can get OVM and all tonight with my Vol-Om. Personally, I'd just find a matching fan to the one in the xbox at some comp store to switch. But I only notice my fan when it's above 80% speed. Mostly the noise will drown it out.
Edit: Oh yea, and I'm almost certain you can take off the heatsink fan.

Does the 1.6 version of the XBox still have both fans? Cause I came accross a post on the XBMC forums where someone has a 1.6 and apprently he only has only one fan ... the back fan, nothing on the GPU.
Thanks,
Harry

Like I said, the fan on the heatsink disapeared after about v1.1 so there should be no fan there, just the one in back. So unless you have a very old xbox like me, basically the first 6 months it came out, then you should only have the 1 fan. Don't worry about it, the heatsinks are quieter then the fan.

Ok, if the fan is making noise, get a new one from somebody(i have one), unless you have it modded and the fan speed is indeed turned up.
As for upgrading the fan, you dont need to, nobody has really had a problem using the stock xbox fan, ive left mine on for a couple days and it all good.
Just make sure if you have a mod to check the fan speed, as Flaw said, he can only really hear the fan loud enough to be noisy if his speed is at 80%. _________________ Hotswap Tutorial|FTP Tutorial|HyperX Flashing Tutorial

Hello guys. I was wondering if the 80mm fan already runs at 12 volts once plugged in onto the XBOX or do I have to modify the fan wires so that it could run at 12 volts? Thanks!

no it a plug and play but you need to do some mods to the xbox case so the 80mm will fit

Your best bet for a cooling fan is too get yourself a little metal fan at wal-mart. I bought one from there for about 6 bucks and put it in the left top corner pointing into the xbox and turn it on when you are playing the xbox. It does wonders for the motherboard and pushes cool air into the whole box. Easy solution to a rather important problem.
