Is it possible to just swap hard drives from one xbox to another without having to do any extra work? I have two xboxes, one with a dead hard drive and the second has a broken dvd drive. I just want to take the hard drive out of the one and put it into the second. Is this possible without having to do all of the formatting and locking and that kind of stuff? Thanks

No, unfortunately it is not possible, without work being done. The HDD of any Xbox is locked to a specific motherboard using a file called the eeprom.bin.

That file contains details of the HDD and motherboard it is locked to. If you were to place a HDD into a different Xbox, the machine would not boot, and you'd end up at the "Contact Microsoft Support" screen.

Cloning, XboxHDM or an eeprom builder can be used, but you can't just plug and play.

Thanks for the info. Since I can't just swap the drives, could I just swap the dvd drive?

Yeah, swapping the DVD drives is not a problem. They've got no encoding on them so they'll quite happily switch between boxes.
