Ok, system admin ...however, xbox noob. Over a year ago, a friend and I mod'd my xbox, since I love to play with linux, and wanted to use it as a poor mans multimedia center hooked up to my network.
Here is what I want to do ....what I know
1) Update whatever needs to be updated to hopefully fix some problems I have when trying to run my newer games I bought yesterday (which won't run).
2) The only thing I am halfway familiar with using is XBMC (think it is version 1.1, from Jan 2006) ...SLOWLY downloading 2.0.1 now. However, don't really know correct way to update xbmc from one version to the other. From what I can tell though, this is just the dashboard, but unsure as to whether or not this will improve how games act, whether they will work or not etc ...
3) This is a softmod, not sure exactly what other information might be needed, but let me know what you need to know, and I'll immediately find out for you ...especially if you tell me where to go to get that information
Thanks,

Ok to update XBMC use AID 4.01 to install it as your dashboard. Might also want to update your softmod to SID 5.01 since it has the newest in softmodding things. Also if some of your games may not work, try clearing your E:\Cache and see if it helps...yes i know cloud i may be stealing your glory with this last one _________________

Roger ...will see about finding AID 4.01 ....hope xbox can "boot" from it ...
downloaded 2.0.1 xbmc, can ftp'd the files over to the xbox under E:\xbmc, and the xbox still turns on, but when hangs on the splash screen for XBMC.
Suggestions ? ...I make some sort of xbox noob error ? ....If it comes down to it I will take out the drive and put the original files back (of course I copied the files over the network to a storage drive). Though one of the points of doing it was to update xbmc and whatever else needed updating.

Update: Using AID 4.01 ...got the xbox back going, with the updated XBMC.
Also, where do I check to see what version of the softmod I am running ? And along those lines, benefits to upgrading to the softmod 5.01 ....??
Hmm, had some other questions for the gurus, can't remember them right off hand now ....haven't woke up good yet.

Hmm, from what I can tell ...most important thing left ...I think ...is to update to softmod 5.01. I know the ms dash is at latest version, and xbmc is update and everything seems to be working fine. I'm really not sure which version of the softmod I am running ....whatever was out around Jan 2006 ...just because I'm not sure where to find that version.
Since the xbox is already softmod'd, I can use the softmod section off the AID 4.01 disc correct ? ...In that section, use Standard ? Since I'm probably not going to have this connected with HD cables, and since I do have a C/D/E/F drives. Or do I have to do the whole copy savegame thing over again ?? (copying savegame to memory card ...urgh ...etc...)

Ive never installed softmods with AID so i dont know how it would go. If you install in jan 2006 then you most likely have SID 4 or 3. Even though it may not matter its still nice to have the newest softmod. _________________

you would have to remove the current softmod, then reload the new softmod loader and gamesave on a memory card and re-install it...it takes about 5-10 minutes to install.

Just to be clear, SID 5.01 is basically a bugfixed version of SID 5.
It should be used instead of SID 5, because 5.01 fixes the issues that were arising in version 5.
Version 5.01 has been tested by DJB and myself and to date, we have encountered no problems with this updated version. Tests have been done on all models of Xbox v1.0 - v1.6.
Now thats not a cast-iron guarantee that it will work on every single Xbox you ever try, cos everything is different, but it is an assurance that we think its the easiest to use, most up-to-date and reliable version of SID so far.
