Ok, taking a break from the chipped disaster box...

I'm working on adding a new hard disk to my soft modded box. I've used the linux program but no matter what I try, i cant make my disk lock. I have looked it up and it IS lockable. Is there a program that I can use via windows to build and lock a hard drive?

If you're planning on doing it via your PC, you could use XboxHDm to build and lock your drive.

Otherwise, you could always use Chimp from within the Xbox to clone the softmod onto the larger drive for you (tutorial below my sig).

I actually used xboxhdm for the whole thing on my old pc and everythignseems to be working great. Took me a while to realize I had to enable f: in the settings (I formatted 2x before I realized this). But all 40GB are working now. 40gb isnt much but, its better than 8 Smile

I think I should have just soft modded my other drive and avoided the nightmare that I'm dealing with now.

One more question. My new drive is a 7200 RPM. Is the extra heat going to be an issue?

That is an easy fix. If you have unleashx go into the settings menu. Then go to system, and scroll down for a while. You will find a thing called fan speed. Put it up to whatever you want and you will have a fan that takes more heat out. Very Happy

I hactually have a few old hard disk cooler fans from my old PC that I might try to mod in. I'm pretty handy with a dremmel and I have a few extra cases if I mess this one up Smile

A 7200rpm HDD is pretty standard nowadays. Every PC and every HDD upgraded Xbox runs one (if not faster in PC's), so I wouldn't worry about the heat if I was you. You've got heatsinks and fans in there, so there's no way any of your components are going to even approach a dangerous temperature.

std HDD speed for xbox and pc is 5400RPM. you will only generally see the likes of 10000-15000 rpm discs in servers on a SCSI interface although i do believe you can now get 10000rpm serial ATA drives.

you can increase the fan speed through the bios or dash. The problem is all those components squashed into a small black plastic case with a metal guard inside reflecting heat back in. case mods are the best way

Thats why I was thinking about adding the cooler fans. They mount in the front of the drive so I figured I could modify the front of my case to fit them and then just add another molex power lead for thier power. Even if it doesnt help miuch it should still look pretty cool Smile
