I want to build a distance measuring device for my car. I want to but it in front of the car so I can tell the distance between my car the and back wall of the garage. So I will be able to tell the distance as the car pulls in. But what I am having problems with is checking the distance between the wall and the front of the car.
I thought about using an IR transmitter and Receiver, but remembered the receiver and transmitter will not all be facing right at each other when I am pulling into the garage. I don’t really if the IRs have an angle of operation or not.
Anyway, I was wondering if anybody can help on how to find the distance between the car and garage wall. I am tryin to make the max distance measurable at least 12yards and keep the cost as low as possible.
Any idea will be welcomed

Cheap = Ping pong ball, string, and a screw.
Sorry, don't know too much about distance measurement devices, but it sounds to me like you're looking for a basic sonar device. I know there are several basic sonar devices used for measuring short distances made by a company called Zircon. That might be a good place to look for ideas.

I've seen in a magazine once for like $20 where its a devie that goes on your wall with a green, orange, and red light.. and it tells how close you are getting to the garage wall, not sure what kind of technology it uses, but ill try to find it again..

That is along the lines of what I would have suggested. AS far as I know, devices like these use ultrasonic transducers to determin the distance.
If you were looking at spending just a little more, you could buy a kit to fit to the car, so it works wherever you go (shopping, work etc.) not just in your garage _________________
