Well I have no experience modding an Xbox, and in fact just got a used Xbox for free of a friend about a week ago. It was working just fine when he gave it to me, and only got rid of it since he got a 360. Today I went out and bought Halo 1/2 and was looking forward to setting up the Xbox and begin playing. I booted it up the first time and it gave me error 7, I tried a few more times with controllers unplugged / different games. I occasionally got error code 09. So, I looked up error codes 7 and 9 on google, leading me to this site. I found a list of error codes and what they mean, and 7 and 9 were both for hard drives, and both suggested checking / changing the IDE cable. That was easy, I changed the cable, and now when I boot up, I get error code 6, also HD related. So, basically, I am hoping someone can give me instructions on what to do, I have no console modding experience at all (though I am pretty computer savvy). Also, as far as I can tell the system was never modded before. Thanks in advance...
I found this link...

Seems like it might work, I need to set up a second computer first though, since I really don't feel safe swapping HD's on the fly with this computer.

If the cable repalcement will consistently produce a #6 error, it means that the drive is locked with a password other than the one the xbox is calculating. Was the xbox ever opened before you opened it?

My friend told me he opened it once to clean out the fans and stuff with a can of compressed air, but he never tampered with anything beyond that. Also it was working after he did that, so he didn't cause anything... at least nothing that happened right away. The hard drive is a Western Digital Protege.

check to maike sure that you did not bend any of the pins on the ide connector. Commonplace to do so. Does the drive spin up? whirring sound? You do know you cannot just use a pc IDE cable?

It spins up, sometimes it makes a clicking noise which worries me. It's now giving me error code 16, which means the MS Dash files are damaged or missing, which leads me to believe the hard drive is failing slowly.
Can't use a PC IDE cable? Huh... I did, and it was doing the same thing as it was with the one that came with the Xbox. No, none of the pins are bent.

I got an xbox yesterday that had an error 7. I took the top off and since the drive would not open I wanted to install oner with a manual open switch for testing. I installed a refurb thompson and boom, the xbox works fine. I have tried the drive that was removed in 2 other units and it causes HD error 7 in all.
