Hey everyone,
got here a new Xbox,
the owner replaced the skin he told me,
I don't know if it worked before he replaced the skin,
he first got a Error 7 (kernel - HDD timeout),
now it has error 21 (anywhere),
the hard disk makes a repeating clicking noise, like it can't read it's files...
so I'm 90% sure the necessary files for booting are in damaged sectors!?
I've tried another IDE cable, no luck there...
booting with game also gives error, does not load game...
so I guess the hard disk is never unlocked by the Xbox?
will try to hotswap... since I need the eeprom to make a new hdd...
but if the hard drive never gets unlocked...
then what can be done?
going to try HDDregenerator 1.51, hopefully that works for a locked drive?
are there any hard drive tools possible to fix this?
running HDD Regenerator:
now at 156 MB, 427 bad sectors recovered of 427 bad sectors and total 320000 scanned so far),
so that sounds promising,
sure hope that it will fix it enough to boot softmod menu so I can backup and ftp eeprom...
that Xbox was bought new through eBay,
another happy eBayer, lol
or at least I wouldn't know how replacing case can cause such hdd corruption!!!
till now still every bad sector recovered...
but goes soooo slow.... patience............
it went till 176MB, where it froze... (the love was gone a moment there )
atapwd did not find ata hdd!?
I rebooted Xbox, hotswapped again, started HDD Regenerator,
it went straight to 176 without finding any bad sectors,
there it started to recover bad sectors again!
nice, that means those bad sectors really were recovered and that the app is doing a good job
C partition would be 499 MB, now at 185 MB and very slow when bad sectors need to be recovered...
wish me luck (and if this works a big thanks to Dmitriy Primochenko for his great hdd recovery app, name sounds like another genius Russian?)
will keep you posted when it's done
does anyone know what precisely triggers the locking of the hdd?
I thought only when you cut the power, but when I reboot pc (and power stays on for the unlocked hdd), it seemed to have relocked again?
so to be safe I remove IDE when I reboot pc... and that seems to keep it unlocked

If its clicking when it starts up then the hdd is dead... _________________

If he is recovering bad sectors the hdd cant be dead but the clicking wold lead you to think its about to die, then again the hdd in my 1.0 sounds like its going to blow right out the case but has ran for over a year that way.
it was able to recover all bad sectors till 372MB which is sector 762518,
at that point few last bad sectors not recovered,
& there it freezes...
searched from where it would start scanning again:
at 625 MB it recovered 2 bad sectors and the rest seemed to be fine (didnt let it run further then 800MB),
at 610MB it froze at 1st sector (which was bad),
I'm going to clone drives with WinHex, it will skip the bad sectors,
and hopefully it makes something working of the drive,
so I can get the eeprom and put a descent drive in it... a seagate from 2006 soooo f%cked up....

Well hope you get it all workin man. I wonder why the drive was all f'd up though? If you can't get it backed up and you can get your hands on a solderless chip you could always pop it in and use it to put a new HD in and lock it. I bought an X-2 and the solderless adapters awhile back just in case anything like that happened. _________________

Could always get a soldered chip and make the xbox chipped which is better than softmods _________________

Well I was talkin more of for repair purposes like if anyone ever messed a box up you can fix it for em and get a lil $$ from it. One of my best friends sold me about 20 xboxes that all powered up but they would error for $100. He thought they were worthless so I got em for pretty much nothin. I spent a couple days fixin em all and moddin em and sold em for $50 each. _________________
first I tried cloning the drive with Winhex to a unlocked softmodded hdd,
no luck there,
then I hotswapped in UnleashX and fromatted C and E (which I tried first in AID, but no luck, probably because it booted with my 250gb hdd, C was 0 free and not visible through ftp),
then I ftp'ed MS dash to C,
rebooted MS dash bootssssssssssssss, nice
never thought I'd be that happy to see that dash
loaded SID, ftp'ed eeprom,
now installing dual boot softmod,
chewed a long time on shadowC.img... but just checked in he's past it,
softmod installed succesfully!
I'll keep the eeprom safe and ask what owner wants:
stick with the corrupted drive (which will probably get worse and worse,
at least thats the case when that happens with a very old drive, but this drive is from 2006 !), or have a bigger hdd,
thanks for your tips,
but why you say modchips are better than softmod?
softmods sometimes have benefits:
- playing ISO's directly from hdd, only possible with softmod I read (maybe they meant only for Toca Race Driver 3, or in general, dunno),
even read about people with modchip installing softmod for that !!!
take care &

The reasom a modchip is better is you can just put a new HD in and pop AID in and set it all up, you can run the HD unlocked, you never have to worry about M$ dash errors and what not cause the M$ dash isn't used, and if you want you can always have a softmod and a chip. I had to fix a chipped box b4 by softmoddin it cause the chip had a bad flash and it wouldn't boot the disk I was gonna use to flash it for some reason. _________________

TSOP is the same thing as haveing an X-2 chip without the chip.
So unlike a softmod you can put in a new hdd and aid and set up the new hdd.
No xboxhdm and no chimp needed.
So in a nut shell TSOP is a poor mans X-2 chip.
