Oh no! A dead xbox!

I'm writing here because AID is where my problems began.

Here's the problem... I think I'm going to end up hotswapping to fix this one. Sad
I softmodded successfully a couple of days ago, and started thinking I was hot stuff... I installed xbmc as a dash on E: and a few other apps.
Then I decided to install Xselect as my dash and run xbmc and xdsl as apps.

Was in XBMC, and opened the AID dvd... It sprang to life, and I proceded to the applications menu, to install the apps first, so I could use the xselect gui to configure my menu upon installing.

I clicked to install XBMC, and it instantly said "done" (whetever it usually says.) I went to the file browser, and the XBMC was not listed in the apps directory. So I thought, "What they hey?" let's start fresh... So I formatted the E drive.

That was the only successful operation I was able to accomplish. The "Prepare E drive" didn't work (just immediately finished triumphantly but unsuccessfully) Formatting didn't change anything about installing apps... I still couldn't do that.

And I couldn't even install X-Select! I did the exact same thing as everything else.

So now, I can't even power the blasted thing up... Obviously, my dash doesn't exist anymore. Even the retail boot fails... No error code, just flashing led on cdrom...

So I'd like to file a bug report (he he...) and ask what I need to do to recover.

Sorry... But a small update...

I'm getting an error 22.

I can also boot to Splinter Cell with the retail boot, but not to the regular dash.

But the AID disk doesn't boot under the modded dash.

Should it still boot? I confess, I never actually had it boot... I always ran it from the installed dash...

Maybe a DVD-R instead of a RW?

I'm seeing a faint glimmer of a possibility...
Edit:
I also happen to have the back-up made by the 4.5 autoinstaller. I have the eeprom, which I hear opens up some less invasive pc assistance...

Eeprom will make things much easier for you should it come down to it. Good on you.

Since you formatted your E, the savegame for your exploit is gone, so your going to have to use xboxhdm.

You can find xboxhdm 1.9 for download in the download section. Extract the files to your PC. If you have a complete backup of C and E after the softmod, just put whatever was in your C backup into the C directory in xboxhdm, E: to E, and the eeprom.bin file to EEPROM(has to be called eeprom.bin). Run the make-iso-win.bat, and it will produce a .iso file for you. Burn this file to a CD if it will fit or a DVD if you need to.

Ok, now open the xbox and remove the HDD. Power down your PC, but leave the disk you burned still in the drive. you'll need to configure your PC wires so that the xbox HDD is jumpered to master and on your primary IDE channel, then put your DVD drive to your secondary IDE channel. Turn the PC on making sure that you have it set to boot from CD. You should be greeted with a text based menu.

Choose number 3. When prompted again, type "unlockhd -a". This will use the eeprom.bin file to unlock the drive. Reboot the PC. This time at the menu choose 1, then when prompted type "xboxhd". You will be shown another text menu. I would choose the option to delete the partition table, and then after then do number 1 "create from scratch". Once that is all done, reboot again, this time choosing 3, and when prompted type "lockhd -a". This will relock the drive.

power down the PC, put the HDD in the xbox, and it should be back up and running.

Keep in mind this will erase any and all changes since your backups. If you want to go stock you could also just put in the msdash files instead of your backup and then do a complete re-softmod.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the fast reply...

So this auto-created folder will actually have the drive "e" in it, too? I'm fairly certian it only has the stuff from the "c" drive...

I can't really tell, though, because it's not really labeled as such...

I've got default.ini, default.xbe, and unmod.xbe.
I've got a folder named MS, which contains a bunch of subdirectories, some .xtf files, and an xboxdash.xbe.
I've got an Eeprom folder which contains:
bios.bin, disk.bin, eeprom.bin, hddkey.bin, and hddinfo.txt, as well as SID4.

Aw heck... on second recollect, this may be the back-up created by the AID disk, after the softmod was already installed... I see buzzards circling...

Now that I'm cracking the box open, I'm wondering if this is a good time to just install a new hard drive. It doesn't sound like that would even add any steps, just require a lockable drive to shove in the box. Am I right in that?

Edit:
Browsing though the Aid Iso, the folder \files\dash I spy a ms-c.zip and an ms-e.zip. Upon inspection, their contents look very familiar... Can I just extract them into the appropriate folder?

Ok... It happened again... I still can't install any apps or emulators... The only thing I can install is Soft Dashboards... And when I tried to do that, after reboot, I got an error. The initial exploit works fine, and the DVD seems to be perfectly readable, but I can't install anything. Could this have to do with the way that the DVD seems to not be bootable? I can choose "Launch DVD" from Unleash, and it runs fine, albeit slowly.

Has anyone heard of this before? I'm ready to try some more manual installs, but if someone could enlighten me, that'd be great!

Ahem... Ok, I figured out the problem... I had to pull out the usb card I had used to transfer the saved games. Then everything worked fine!

On the up side, I'm now extremely fast and reformatting these hard drives, and I took the opportunity to upgrade to a 80gig.

Thanks for all your help, guys.
