Ok I was reading and reading and wow I was stunned. I assumed that all the bad stuff with DVD drives where tommy models. Well I got the xbox a long time ago and just assumed that I had a tommy drive. I have heard great things about phillips and sammy's, alot of good things. Now I have been have a heck of a time getting my DVD drive to run DVD-r's. I come to find that I have a Phillips DVD drive. So I asked the guy that chipped my box and he said these are the worest drives??? Not the tommy?? I am shock and wanted to see your views?

Any piece of hardware can break. Have you tried cleaning it? Any funny noises? _________________

As far as I know, the older samsungs (SDG-605B) are better than the new ones that are in the the v1.6 xbox (SDG-605F).
The new one won't read CD-Rs unless the drive is tweaked? _________________

I have had my thompson read everything i threw in it, the tommys just burn out faster is the only thing, and the samsungs just crap out with any reason as to why it does, then again most electronics do that anyways lol _________________

From my experience, here's how I rate the drives I have played with. I have also done some experimentation between the Sammy SD-605 and the Hitachi and found that a 3GB Xfer by disk has only a 13 second difference in transfer times.
Sammy A+
Hitachi A
Phillips B-
Thompson C-
Now, that basically is more or less in transfer times. As far as reading various types of media here are my experiences.
Sammy A+
Hitachi A
Phillips C+
Thopmson D+
I have actually had some stubborn Phillips drives which is why I only rated it the way I did. I always keep a spare sammy around just in case I try to run an installer on someones machine and they have a drive other than a sammy. _________________ Xbox 1.4

I reckon the phillips are good. my brother has an xbox(never bothered to check what cd drive he has) he cannot get any copied media except dvd-r to work. He paid €200 for it. (around $230 for any americans). I bought my box for €70 ($85) and it reads all media i throw at it. I know its definitely phillips cos i opened up my box and had a look. i also got the 10gb stock hard drive, am I lucky or what??
