hey all i just bought an xbox off of a friend of a friend who is completely clueless, they seem to think it's got a modchip (it plays backups so i guess so) and when it boots:
- tray open - scary blue menu with settings, reboot, backup etc.. (sorry i dont know the name)
- tray closed - something called evox dash with start game, applications etc...
now for some questions,
i notice you like to know info about the xbox on these forums so where do i find the version (maybe other useful things) about the xbox (it doesnt seem like the official case so i cant just check that like i thought i could)
do you think it would be wise to re-install / update the software on it because this person has added stuff i dont need and, they aren't the most compitent person ever, i suspect most of the things are botched together at best

Well, to me you seem like a newbie, so I can tell you this: Do not touch what you barely know about. Messing around with the EvoX dashboard may lead to many screw ups wit your Xbox. It is a good thing that the Xbox was moded even before you bought it, and you need to learn a few things about it now.
EvoX is mostly used by the professionals who mod Halo 2 and mostly hack the Xbox. I have tried it, and it seems that it is a really complicated dashboard which requires flashing and updating of the BIOs frequently. As for me, I don't know much about other dashboards except for UnleashX, which is the most newbie and pro friendly dashboard, with many many posibilites, skins, aplications and what not. I would suggest later on you install UnleashX.
WARNING, SOFTMODDING MAY LEAD TO XBOX SOFTWARE SCREW UPS, so be very carefull with what you are doing. One thing you should never do: Unlock the Hard Drive [HDD, HD, Hard disc, the same thing] because that may lead to a fatal unfixable error 5, which is only fixed if you have the eeprom backed up.
I would suggest you install Xbox Media Center, so you can watch music, rip MP3 and do all kinds of media fun on your Xbox, basically, it will turn to a Media Center, just like a PC.

sure, i can help you. You can plug your Xbox same as if you are going to Xbox live, but be in the dashboard, then... well, I forgot, but you have to go to settings, and probably look under live updates, and see if there is a new version available. If it gives you HTTP eror 2 or something, than there is some unfixed bugs in that version. You might as well get AID 3.0 Final and see what options you have, or just use SID 4.5, or the most recent version to install UX over, before you install the new UX, make sure you uninstall the old one, and backup the eeprom. ok thank you exyboxy (i think that was the only useful comment lol) i am a newbie in terms of xbox's but i am by far no general computing newbie.
theres too many tutorials on this site i cant really find what i'm looking for lol, i guess i will mess around with applications and emulators till i get more comfortable then look up this unleashx thing or prehaps upgrade my evox.
any good tutorials for installing / uninstalling apps / emulators that you guys know of?

Just get your hands on AutoInstaller Deluxe. But, you really should find out how your machine is modded prior to updating applications and such.
one wrong move and your Xbox is a paperweight until you figure out what you did and how to rectify.
AID can install the newest apps. It's pretty much like installing applications onto a PC, as long as you know your hierarchy and know where to put everything that is.
Knowing your HD configuration will make things much easier on you as far as intalling apps. _________________ Xbox 1.4

If you ftp into your xbox, you will be able to delete anything that you don't want in it. Just go into your E: folder look for apps and remove what you don't want.
Being that it's already modded and it's working leave it be. If it ain't broke don't fix it.
Just delete what you don't want and it will clean up your xbox. DO NOT TOUCH anything in C:. That's where all the default files are. Delete those and you're xbox will be FUBARED big time.
Try that and let us know how it goes. _________________

hey cheers guys just a lil update as requested:
so far i have
- removed all the excess files (every progream was copied over twice... very weird).
- added xbmc which is fantastic and im currently making a skin for it
- cleaned up the evox.ini and made a skin for that too (allthough ftp doesnt seem to work when i boot into evox but it does when i boot into that other thing (the blue one) which is weird because the network settings are identical)
- and further tweaker other little things
so unless you can fix my ftp issues i guess i'm sorted for now, paid a vist to #xbins and got some new software to play with for now..
so can anyone recommend any other fun things to do with this beast of a box?
p.s thanks for all the help everyone && enigma516 i love your avator, it's hilarious
