I opened my Xbox for the first time today, so I can take out the hd and do a hotswap. Meanwhile, I was thinking, maybe I shoud start modifying the case. I was wondering, how the hell do i take this jewel off, do I just tear it off with the flat screwdriver, or is there any clips on the back of it? I discovered that it's kid of hard to take of the aluminum plate under the hub, so can you guys tell me how to take it off? Or, maybe a link to a tutorial?

There are two popular methods of removing the jewel: hot and cold.
The cold method is to drop the top of you xbox into the freezer for 2-3 hours. Then pull it out, flip it upside down, and hit the back side with a shoe. The jewel SHOULD just pop off. This has a very high success rate with 1.0-1.1 boxes, but they apparently changed the glue after that and it doesn't work so well for anything later.
I have always done the hot method: get a hair dryer, put it to high, and heat the back of the jewel for 5-10 minutes. This will partially melt the glue holding it in place. After that it is a matter of applying more heat while carefully prying the jewel off.
The best way of using the hot method that I have found was to use a pearing knife to just lift up the edge, and then use some floss like a saw to cut through the heated glue. This works wonders for me, and I recommend it to anyone trying to remove the jewel.
The next question will likely be how to remove the glue itself. The answer: zippo fluid. Put some onto a rag, leave the rag on top of the glue for 5 mintes, then rub the glue off. Works great and doesn't mar the plastic.
