It would be using just the xbox I think, but it's just an idea of how to do it right now. I'm still trying to get a HDD for it and my budget is sort of no-existent right now.
It all depends on being able to have more than one HDD in the Xbox at the same time (maybe the DVD drive as well Confused ).
Anyone been able to work that out before?
It could be that I have no idea what I'm doing, but that hasn't stopped me from trying stuff like this before!
Also, if anyone knows where to get a cheap Hard Drive (250GB +) in Canada that would help a lot.

If your xbox is softmodded, you won't be able to just throw in your new drive, unlike a modchipped Xbox where you can.

Ah I thought you could do it using just one softmodded Xbox and this app. "Chimp"? That's what I understood from the AID manual ( p. 38 ) Wink ... ? Doesn't mention anything about having a second Xbox, seems a risky procedure though ...

Crap, now I feel like an idiot...
The Chimp method is basically what I was going to do, but I was going to try some sort of weird cable setup rather than a hotswap. I didn't even read that part of the AID manual until now Confused Embarassed
Oh well... I guess I raised my own hopes and dashed them quite expertly.

hellblazer55: I'm in downtown toronto and don't have any xbox budget right now. Other wise I would probably get a chip, a new DVD drive and WRT54G On top of a new HDD Razz. thanks for the offer though

sigh... I guess I should be thankful I get as much as I do out of my xbox though, it only cost me $20

Pirrup (who wrote the Chimp tutorial in the AID manual) says he's done it tones of times and never broke an Xbox! So there is a way to do it with just one, softmodded, Xbox!
I'm going to try it out as soon as I find a compatible drive.

Hey PowerBox!
How's everything going?

And... how's the guide coming along?
I (and I'm sure quite a few others) can't wait for the next update.

Wow. Hadn't seen this thread until now, but it's great to see that someone is trying to expand the modding community to include Macs.

Has anyone tried compiling a mac equivelant to the xbox-hq PC essentials? I think it would be great to include that with the AID releases as well.

Success! I now have an 80 Gig in my box and I didn't need a PC or a chipped xbox.

PowerBox, this would be great to have in the guide but, I would ask pirrup before putting the chimp method in as he made the tut in the first place.

Here is the instructions (with some bit's added by me):

!NOTICE: It's a good idea to backup your drive just in case. or at least the eeprom.

From the Auto-Installer Deluxe 3 official manual:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hard Drive Cloning using Chimp (by Pirrup)

Hardware Needed:

1. A Y power splitter (or use an external power source for the second HD, like another PC or external disk box etc.)
2. Torx 10, 15, 20 Screwdrivers to open Xbox and replace the HD

Software Needed:

3. Chimp (installed as an app)

Steps:

1. Open the box with the Torx 20 Screwdriver.
2. Use the Y splitter so both Hard Drives would have power when Xbox is on.
(2.1 change the jumper settings on your new HDD to slave*)
3. Loosen the DVD's IDE, but must still be bootable
(it minimize the remove chance of IDE damaging as it is really not designed for hotplugging).
4. Boot Xbox.
5. Launch chimp.
6. Swap the IDE cable from DVD to the new HD.
7. Follow the menu (the first item must be run before others).
(8. Chimp can lock the new HDD using the key from your motherboard*)
(9. change the jumper settings on your new HDD back to master after chimp is done*)
(10. You will probably have to enable the F partition to access all of the new HDD*)

(*Steps 2.1, 8, 9 and 10 in brackets added by Wil87 for this post*)

Xbox 1.6 problems?

If you have a 1.6 box and you can't see the Linux prog (graphics). In that case, you need to telnet into it, the menu will be same.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When I first started it up, it looked like nothing was different.
But, as soon as I enabled the F partition, I had a whole 70 delicious gigs!

Chimp is by far the easiest HDD upgrade method I've read about.

Well, I'm going to go back to filling my new HDD!
C yall later...

Glad to hear that there are easy ways for the Mac community to mod with the rest of us.
