Hi all,

Just wondering if there is a 'kid friendly' dashboard available. I currently have three EvoX M8 bioses that boot EvolutionX 3935, Avalaunch 0.49.1 or UnleashX respectively. The issue with these dashboards and kids is that all apps and games, including System menus are displayed.

Is there a dash available that only displays the game list?

Is there some parental game control available?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

In EvoX if you put a # next to an object, like so:

[Menu]

Section "Root"
{
Item "Launch DVD",ID_Launch_DVD
# Item "Trainers",ID_trainer
Item "Xbox Dashboard",ID_MS_Dash
# Item "Reboot",ID_Quick_Reboot
Item "Power Cycle",ID_Full_Reboot
Item "Power Off",ID_Power_Off
# Item "Lock Harddisk",@210
# Item "Unlock Harddisk",@211
Section "System Utils"
{
Item "Settings",ID_Settings
# Item "Flash BIOS",ID_Flash_Bios
Item "Backup",ID_Backup
Item "Skins",ID_Skins
Item "Trainers",ID_trainer
}

It wont show up. As you can see, I put one on the 'Flash Bios' line so that unknowing persons can't flip switches and cause damage. Plus, its an easy way to make menus shorter.

It might be a pain for you, but you can also have 2 evox.ini's (evox.ini and evox2.ini). Use an app like boxplorer or whatever to rename the child ini to evox.ini and the adult to evox1.ini (or whatever you choose).

I've used this technique for patched xbe's so that I don't have to ftp when I need it.

Once you are done reset your box and you are good to go. Obviously, this will require at least one app available from the 'kids' menu.

Thanks CHEEZ_PUF,

You were an inspiration to my final solution. For those other concerned parents out there, here is my solution.

My default bios on the Xenium is Evox M8 which boots from the F: drive which contains the full EvolutionX 3935 menu incuding some of my own additions. This was unsuitable for my kids so I decided to do the following;

1. Using EvTool 1.06 updated an Evox M7 bios to boot from C: drive

2. Installed EvolutionX 3935 on the C: drive

3. Created two folders on the F: drive for games. ie: Games_Kids and Games_Adults.

4. Moved games into the respective folders.

5. Modifed the evox.ini file on C: to disable (#) all items I did not want my kids to have access to as well as restrict autoadd of games to F:\Games_Kids.

6. Modified the evox.ini file on F: to include both game folders. ie: Games_Kids and Games_Adults.

7. Rebooted and added new launch item in the Xenium 2.0 OS. ie: Added the Evox M7 bios (C: drive version with restricted evox.ini) and made this the default launch item.

That's it. My kids now can boot the xbox and it now auto loads EvolutionX 3935 with access to only the games appropriate for thier age and does not grant access to items such as System Settings.

Cheers.

Good job guys!!

You both have given us a lot of info. As a father of a 7 year old girl, and having many nephews that always are digging my xbox when visiting, it's cool to know that there is a semi easy solution to child proofing it if need be.

Also nice to know that there are parents out there who care about what their kids see.

Keep up the awesome work!

hi guys,

great topic this one.. Good for all those with kids like most of us have.. Smile (me too). 10yo daughter..

anyway, i always suggest evox dashboard to anyone who has kids using their xbox.. It can be easily edited to ADD/REMOVE sections of the XBOX HDD.. I normally remove all the system settings and flashing options from any xboxes i mod because the guys dont know what they are doing..
I suppose its the same for kids too..

Maybe someone could upload a CUSTOM EVOX.INI which works exactly how cheez_puf mentioned.. (hint hint hehehe ).

Then other users who dont have as much experience can just copy this over to their xbox.. Maybe even DJB could add this option to the autoinstlaler int he future..

got to get going.. got tonnes of forum posts, emails and other shit to get done.. Keep at it boys.. I like reading this topic.. Very educational..

l8r from way way down under,

hi guys,

Thought I should explain why I used the combination of EvoX M7 and M8 bioses.

The reason is; I seem to have an issue with M8 bioses and EvolutionX 3935 running from the C: drive. M7 and 3935 detects and lists all my apps & games when installed on C:, but M8 and 3935 does not. Therefore, I use the M7/3935/C:Drive option for my kids and the M8/3935/F:Drive option for myself.

Does that make any sense?

I'm more than happy to upload both evox.ini files (child proof & complete) as well as my F: drive M8 bios for anyone that's interested, if someone can tell me how to do it.

Cheers.

hi KeranSchlesier,

to upload your evox.ini file just zipp it up and then go to the DOWNLOADS section.. Once you are there you will see a UPLOAD FILE link.. Smile

Just click the uPLOAD FILE link and then fill out the form.. Click on the browse button and submit your file.. It will have to be approved once its submitted by you but that shouldnt take long..

Heres a direct link anyway to the upload page:
http://xbox-hq.com/html/downloads-AddDownloadUpload.html
(THIS IS FOR NORMAL FILES)

http://xbox-hq.com/html/downloadsvip-AddDownloadUpload.html
(THIS IS FOR DASHBOARD, BIOS FILES ETC)

If the file is ILLEGAL like a bios etc then you should upload it in the VIP DOWNLOADS SECTION.

If the file is LEGAL like a cromwell bios or a evox.ini, evox skin or pc app etc upload it to the NORMAL DOWNLOADS SECTION..

thats it..

just a tip:
before uploading anything.. Always search to make sure its not already available in the download section.. There is a search box in each dedicated section..

hope to see ya submitting your evox.ini's (in zipped format) really soon

cheers,

forahobby

hi guys,

the word 'illegal' frightens me Wink so i've decided to paste the contents of my 'kids' evox.ini file here and if you want an Evox M8 bios for your F: drive, just grab EvTool 1.06 and change the path to evoxdash.xbe in an existing M8 bin file. If you want the bios description displayed on your dashboard, copy the MD5 checksum, created when you save the file, into the [Bios] section of the evox.ini file.

Cheers

Keran

You are more active in monitoring your kid's gaming experience than 99% of parents on this planet. You (and others like you) are an inspiration.

This crap isn't hard and only takes a few minutes once you get the hang of it.

Glad I could help.

Sorry to bump but this is a good thread, what is going on here is similar to what Im trying to do for a friends v1.1.
Im even (still) designing a child-proof circuit that will let my friend choose between Stock or 120GB HD for Xbox live. We all know the hell that can be caused when we unplug a harddisk while its still running. The circuit Im working on will keep the user from switching power from one disk to the other while the unit is still on. In other words, what ever position the toggle switch is in when the Box is started the box will see untill its turnrd off, regardless of post-turn-on switch state. Its still half on paper and half on my breadboard, but when Im done Ill simplify it and make a tutorial so I wont have to type how to make it over and over Smile.

Anyway, here is my question. In the OS 2.0 Application Launch menu for the Ice.
Would you have both "Child safe Xbox" and "F: Xbox" (or whatever their names are) both listed?
If so how would you keep your child from acessing the "F:" version from the launch menu?
MY friend who Im doing this for works at night so he isn't always around when they turn on the xbox, so I am trying to put the box on lockdown.

ALSO he wants me to put on UnleashX with a diffrent ICE LED color for that dash, I know that this can easily be done by loading onto the Xodius 2.0 launch menu a modified M8 bios that points to UX on C:. But the bios Im making with EVtool isnt quite working out for me. Ive tried two diffent times, and each time the power cycles three times and the ICE led turns orange, and the eject light flashes green. This does not happen with a unmodified M8, so it must be me.

Here is the Box's specs:
v1.1
120 GB HDD
Evox Dash, Partitioning, & Apps loaded by HQ auto installer v1.3

Could some of you EVtool gurus show me what Im doing wrong?
Also, anyone heard of a harddisk circuit like the one Im working on? It sucks to spend so much time devoloping something to find someone already did it.
