There are some pretty inexpensive fourth gen chips out there too.

I have just installed an XChanger chip onto a 1.6 mobo and it was a snap. Actually, a lot better than the SmartXX LT OPX chip. Plus the Xchanger allows you network flashing which is a nice feature. Flashing the chip right from your web browser beats creating bios disks hands down...lol.

The Xchanger 2.5 goes for about 20 bucks which is really not bad at all. The OS is very simple, which is a good thing for beginner modders.

Good luck with your mod!

BestBuy has a 250GB HD (cant remember if it was seagate or WD) for 79.99 after rebates.

Also, Radio Shack has a Maxtor 200GB HD for 49.99 after rebates! Not too bad.

My only problem with WD is that I am not too pleased with their warranties.

I have installed litterally 1500 or so HDs in Xbox's over the past three years and the highest fail rate has been this order.

Maxtor
WD
Hitachi
Seagate
Samsung.

Samsung are my favorite, they are by far about the quietest drives I have ever an into. Even with the Xbox lid off I have a hard time hearing them.

Maxtor has proven to me to have a very high fail rate, but their 5 year warranty always made up for their short-comings.

Seagate is now offering 5 year warranties too, so you would be good to go there.

As far as performance goes...I have never really noticed the difference between any of the drives that I have used...besides noise that is.

Not sure what you are going to do with your machine, but if you are just going to play games, emu's/roms, divx files, music files etc... I don't think performance is going to be an issue.

As far as vendors that allow paypal payments, try some sponsors from this site first. If no joy there, I have always used this company and they accepted paypal. I haven't purchased anything from them in a few months, but I would imagine they still accept it.

If he stands behind the warranty...yes.

Especially if it's a used and/or refurb'd drive. What I liked about the factory warranties was, as soon as I ended up with a buggered up drive I would contact the manufacture, get an RMA number, provide my credit card number and they would immediately send me out a replacement drive...even before I shipped defective one back.

Then, I had 30 days to send back defective drive to avoid any charges to my CC. Seagate is a good drive, you got the drive at a decent price too.
