I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this but here goes:
So my xbox is softmodded with SID 4.5 duel boot with UnleashX as the dash and up until yesterday it was working fine, no problems at all.

Then all of a sudden the xbox shut down on its own. Now the power button doesn't work to turn it on...it will turn it off though. The tray button will still turn it on / open the tray, but if I press it again to close the tray it turns off the xbox. The tray open boot is set to msdash, but I have been able to get into UnleashX by un-plugging the power cord, pressing the power button and plugging it back in (no idea why that works?). The main problem though is that no matter what I do the xbox turns itself off after about 5 minutes anyway.

UPDATE: BTW I'm pretty sure it's not overheating because I can still hear the fan and I can see the temperatures in UnleashX and they're not high at all.

Any ideas you guys have would really be appreciated. Thanks!

thats a weird one.. It could be hardware issue but its just so hard to say at this stage.

Maybe you could try reinstall the softmod entirely.. Do a full backup of what you can while you can..

Hopefully its just a software issue and can be fixed by a reinstall of SID..

ill email a couple of our softmod admins now to be sure they see this topic and add their input..

sorry i couldnt be of more helps

cheers,

hobbs

That's the first I've heard of that too.

You could try re-install SID 4.5 via the gamesave, but honestly if it's doing something like that it would be hard to say that it's a software issue. It does sound like something is definately wrong there...

Now, not being able to boot with tthe power button, do you mean it boots with an error or it doesnt work at all? If it doesnt work at all, that's definately a hardware problem.

it almost sounds like a powersupply issue, I got an xbox here in for repair with basically the same problem only its still retail, from my research into it the power supply was arcing causing it to shut down, so it just may require a power supply replacement.

Thanks for the help guys!

DJB: When I hit the power button it doesn't come up with an error, just nothing happens, like it's not plugged in, so it is probably a hardware problem.

I was thinking power supply to, but that doesn't really seem to explain why the power button doesn't work anymore and why closing the tray also turns it off.

Do you guys know if the softmod can even possibly mess with what those two buttons do and stop them from doing anything?

I think tonight I'm going to pop off the faceplate and see if hopefully it's just that the button assembly is screwed up. If not I guess I'll try re-installing the softmod but I'm worried that it'll shut down right in the middle.

Thanks again.

this is most likely a version 1.0 xbox

it's a known problem because i had it on 2 already...

it is a broken resistor on the mobo and you can only fix it by removing it and replacing it with another. you will need to mesure the current that passes to all the resistors so you know wich is broken .

i'll see if i still got the picture to show you where the resistors are.

the softmod has nothing to do with this ...

cheers

pirrup

So I open the xbox to check out the P/E board and it was fine...I re-installed the softmod, that didn't solve the problem.

So I think you're right pirrup (it is a 1.0 mobo after all). How hard is it to replace a resistor anyway, I'm not exactly an electronics wizard.
