another tip:
We have whats called the 'XBOX HQ AUTO INSTALLER' and the 'XBOX HQ EMULATOR AUTO INSTALLER' these are must have tools.. You can download them from the VIP DOWNLOADS section once you donate to become a VIP.. They will install all your APPS, EMUs and lots of other useful utilities onto your xbox HDD.
ALSO, if you buy a new HDD say a 250 gb it will PARTITION/FORMAT and copy everything ready to go..
Great that you got it to work man. It pays to be persistent about that thing. I took about a week before I managed to get everything working so there you go...

Again, thanks forahobby and maddogtime for your help! I'll definitely stick around the xbox-hq forums because obviously they proved to be very useful! I'll try to pass on any of my 'newbie' knowledge I have as well. I'll look into signing up for the free account too, and thanks for the tip about the VIP Downloads.
