Even though I have a maxtor and have had no problems, it's hard to turn down 20 free gigs. With the 8mb vs 16mb cache, you really won't notice a difference when it comes to the xbox, as the processor is much slower than today's processors. Heck the cable in the xbox is only an ATA100 cable, not even an ATA133 cable, that right there alone basically makes the 16mb perform basically as fast as the 8mb cache would.

I would go with the WesternDigital.

I've been using WD hdd's for 7 yrs now. If I have ANY problems, I can send it back to WD and they will send me a new one right away. Even if I screwed it up! (I locked one with the wrong password and then it wouldn't unlock.)

BTW: the Xbox IDE cable is an ATA66 even though the controller and HDD are ATA100 compatable, you need an 80pin cable for them to be in that mode.

I wouldn't think so, and according to Lee, it's actually ATA66 instead of ATA100, so it's even less of a difference with the larger buffer. I would say the 20gb would be worth the possible difference in speed. I would bet that the factory buffer is no bigger than 4mb.

I think that the Seagate has a 5 year warranty! I'm not sure about the locking abilities of Seagates though.

I love me the maxtors, and I find that they are more lockable than any others.

Have you check the drive models to see if either one is definitely lockable? If one is and one is not, that should answer your question there. If one is but the other is unknown, I would go with the safe one you know is fine.

ya im pretty sure i checked them both and theyre good....

what im trying to discern now is which is more useful....the 20 extra gigs on western digital or the 8mb extra buffer on maxtor.....

now someone above was saying that the 16mb wouldnt be active hardly due to one of the cables i believe....

Im all about the Western Digitals, plus they replace HDs no questions ask, tell em the serial number and if its under 5 years of age they replace em (5 or 3 actualy i dont remember) but I've personaly never had good luck with the Maxtors, and never had too many probs with the WD's but personal experience is everything I guess.
