Ladies and gentleman. A big THANK YOU to everyone on this site those who posed questions and especially those who posted response. Found my way here from another excellent unrelated forum (no not Xbox Scene) and discovered a whole new world to my aging xbox. After a few heart stopping moment ***LOL*** was able to softmod my xbox and add a new hard drive. Total time including downloading AID and SID 3 - 4 hours. Total cost £5 Xplode pack.
I dont know who discovered the exploit nor who wrote the SID and AID but you know who you are so thanks to you guys.
As I am in no position to help those who are struggling, I will be happy to help in another way (idea taken from the previous forum). I am willing to loan the softmodding kit out ie the memory pack and the Splinter Cell game along with AID3 burned software for no profit. If you are interested then please PM me with your address and I will dispatch it. Not sure about if overseas will work but I'll let you guys decide. The idea is to maintain a chain so that the person who has it will forward it the person next on the list. All I ask is that if you are last on the list, you will return the package to me.
Please respond to this thread if it is something anyone is interested in and I will get the ball rolling.
Once again thanks and an excellent site Very Happy
Kit currently with:

Glad you found this site helpful, AID was created By DJB and SID was by Nknave. They both worked long and hard to get to where we are now.

Roo465 that is what I liked about Xbox HQ. Tried Xbox-Scene before I got diverted here. Though I did not ask any questions, made me feel that I was free to ask and would have been responded to instead of the usual DO A SEARCH then Ban @ Xbox-Scene. Think I wouod have researched a query before I posted. Too up themselves at Xbox Scene. Much more friendlier here and the banter only adds to the friendlyness (is there such a word?)

Were you able to flash a bios, load EvoX onto your machine? If so I would really love to know the steps you used / tutorial / webpage you followed. I have tried everything I can find, and nothing matches the tutorials or seems to work.

Loopywolf. After deciding to bite the bullet, I downloaded Sid 4.5 and AID 3 from AIDeluxe.com. Link at the top of this page. Using the Splinter Cell exploit, I used the instructions within each of these downloads and it worked a treat as the whole process is pretty much automated. I assume that you refer to modding an unmodded Xbox ie no chips. I conveniently ignored explanations such as Flashing Bios which you refer to below. Although I am in no way recommending this.

Problems I ran into was:
1. Transferring exploit onto memory card using Xplode from Currys (£4.97 for cable and 8mb memory) as the driver for this did not permit a drag and drop of the exploit files. This was overcome by researching on the internet to reveal that I needed to download the Action Replay (refered to as AR on many sites). To install this driver and software, I needed to remove the Xplode driver and software and forcing XP device manager to load the Ar driver from the directory on which I installed the download. This driver is not XP signed and XP will try and load the Xplode (Shark) Driver. Instead of the downloaded AR driver
2. Transferring the exploit files onto Xbox hard disk drive as it would not allow copy but simply delete. This was fixed by selecting the files to be copied to the hard disk drive and then pressing the right arrow key before the A key.
Apart from these two everything went like clockwork if you followed the PDF instruction included with SID and AID. Even when using Chimp to install a larger Hard Disk Drive (although I must confess that I think that I am still missing some hard disk space on the 40gig hard disk drive I had lying around at home). If I followed the instruction step by step I didn't go very far wrong.
As I struggled to understand some of the tutorials on this and other sites, I kept everything simple by making the Xbox single boot (which I assumed boot the Evox dash whether you power on by the power button or the open tray button).
From my very limited experience of modding my Xbox, I realised that although what I type above seems to make perfect sense to me another person reading may struggle to understand and this is where this forum come into its own.
During my research I found that if you are polite and patient and provide plenty of details, someone will ALWAYS respond to your questions - no matter how Newbie it appears to be.

As you said you have tried everything you can find, and nothing seems to work, maybe you can provide details of where you think it fails then I or someone else can help you. On a very broad term I performed the following steps in soft modding my Xbox (assuming that you already purchased, borrowed all the required hardware:
1. Download SID 4.5 and AID 3
2. Using WinRAR, extract the files to a new directory on the desktop for easy reference
3. Installed Xploder (as above) onto my PC and then transfer the file to the Xploder memory
4. Created AID 3 ISO using the tutorial and burned onto DVD using Nero
5. Transferred Splinter Cell exploit file from memory to Xbox Harddisk
6. Launched Splinter Cell, select new game and load the Linux game saved. This will run the SID program
7. Backed up MS Dash and Epprom as per instruction, then installed the Evox dash chossing single boot option ( I think the boot option needed to be selected first though I can;t recall at this stage) The backup of MS Dash is very important as it allows me to remove the MOD if things did not go as plan by going back to step 6 and then selecting restore MS Dash
8. Select install dash onto C drive and select the Evolution X dash
9. Put the AID dvd into the DVD rom drive and then close the tray.
10. Select turn off Xbox from the SID menu.
11. Turn on the Xbox AID will run automatically to allow you to install various programs such as other dash and Xbox media centre etc dvd2xbox enigmah chimp etc.
If you let me know the step you are struggling I will try to help.

Good luck and remember there are always someone on here willing to help. Anyone reading this please edit the steps above if you think i missed something as this is from my weeklong memory Laughing

Vuster, the stuff arrived today.

I have a quick question, i have a version 1 or 1.1 xbox still with it's original dashboard. Can i run the dual boot mod without updating the dash, or would it be best to use the single boot mod with this dash?

to take the risk of stepping in. Check your "Settings ---> Info" tab under the retail dashboard. Wait for all the legal crap to scroll by, and if you see 5960 by Version or whatever, you're good to go. If not, you have two easy ways to update.

1. Pop in a live enabled game, connect to live and let it update. Then proceed with mod, run dual boot and you're good to go.

2. Softmod with single boot, use AID 3.0 (the link is in my sig) and unmount the "virtual C partition" under advanced options. Then, use the "install dashboards" menu to install MSdash 5960. This will format C, install a clean copy of MSDash, and revert your box back to stock. Then, all you do is mod with dual boot and you're good to go.

Others, feel free to step in and correct any parts of this that were wrong. I'm at school, and don't have my AID disc handy to refer to the menus Very Happy. lol.

AngelosDracul thanks for stepping in.

bobajob - sorry but I didn't even attempt to dual boot mine. I simply went with the single Evolution X boot and installed xmbc as an application. My main reason for modding was to get high definition output, then the option to play from the hard disk drive was a bonus in terms of storage. Who knows I may have time to experiment with the features of xbmc which seems quite interesting but I was getting carried away with the features and tinkering and forgot to enjoy the reason why I bought an xbox in the first place - to play games on them. Laughing
