As I have followed this thread I must agree with the very last post that Gus had.
When deciding how to mod an Xbox, one must know all the different types of mods. Othewise it might be like buying a VW bug later to find out that a 4 Wheel drive Hemi engine would have done better for what you wish to do.
Softmod, chip mod, upgrade of hard drive, to bios or not to bios... that is the question.
Bet you don't currently know what version of xbox you have. 1.0 - 1.6, it may be important later on to pin it down.
Talk to us, and well educate you but study too.
Anyway, don't leap before you've packed the parashute.
Learn before you burn.
For game copies to another disk from a retail, one must have a dvd burner. Most games don't fit on CDR. _________________ http://twitter.com/HQ_Shark2th

I wouldn't. If he offers that level of gaurantee, its unlikely he'll mess up, and then you a) don't get a 360 and b) miss out on all the fun and excitement of modding your own box. It is well worth it, if not for the know how to modify it later than for the self satisfaction.
I put in an 80GB drive and it servers me well, depends on how many games you want to back up as well as what else you need. An 80 gig should let me fit 15-60 games, depending on the games and what else is on the drive.

The amount of games you can put on it depends on the size of the drive and the size of the games, most games are 1-4 gigs, some bigger, some smaller.
Replacing the HDD took me less than an hour, and its not real hard. There is a tutorial here on the HQ on how to do it with a PC.

For upgrading I used the instructions that came in the PDF file accompanying AID2.11, made it very easy, just make sure you have xboxhdm v1.9 and not 1.6
