Ok, I've searched for a answer for this with no luck. I bought a X-box off of e-bay that had a bad DVD drive. I don't want to replace it because I have another perfectly good box that I want to keep if I start with Xbox live. I modded this V1.0 box with a SmartXX v3 chip, and running Evox M8.
What I want to do is have a second hard drive in there so I can have the maximum amount of space for all of my media files and what not. X-DSL can see the drive, and I think I have formatted it but I don't know Linux that good, nor can I read the screen very well. But I know that the BIOS is reporting the second drives model number and such.
How do I give it a drive letter??? It's obviously that I am missing something… Or is this a problem with the BIOS itself? Because with the file explorer in Avalaunch or boXplorer. They still show the “D:” drive letter as a DVD drive.. But there isn’t a DVD drive in the box…
Any thoughts?????

The xbox can only read off one harddrive at a time. You have to phsically cut the power to one, and power the other. Either by a toggle switch, or changing power molex manually. _________________

Well, that just sounds odd that linux can see it and write to it.. Sounds more like a issue the OS more than anything else.... I guess I need to research it some more...

Computer Hardware 101:
A single IDE channel can only detect two devices, a "Master" device and a "Slave" device. _________________ I think I like fixing Boxes more than using them!

I think he is saying he wants two harddrives and no dvd drive. Is that correct?
If that is what you are saying, it is possible. I believe you just need a different bios that is capable of not searching for a dvd drive upon bootup. _________________ XBOX- V1.0

Trust me I know full well what a IDE channel is and how it works. I’ve been building PC’s for over 15 years.. I am not here to prove how l33t I am..
I posted a question about this issue because my lack of knowledge on the X-Box full capabilities. It has a lot of the same compontes that any other pc has, so I expected that the x-box kernel would know that a hard drive took the place of the DVD drive.. I pointed out that with in linux and any utils that use linux kernels it can see the other hard drive and report the drive information. So this now points me in the thought that the issue is with the current X-box kernel. Seeing how it is the only thing at this point not allowing to anything with it..
Well, here is something I just realized. When I look at the drive letters, like in boXplorer
What I don’t understand right now is, if there isn’t a device connected as a slave on the IDE channel the box wont’ boot.. But yet when I have my 20 gig WD drive connected as a slave, and my 30gig WD drive as master. It loads just fine… I can even access the “D:” drive thru any file management util..
Kdx80boy, if you beleve that’s its all with the BIOS, then which do you suggest.. I have Evox M8. and have a ver 1.0 box.

yes u can put more then 1 hd ... but they cannot be put together to aclumate space nor run at the same time.....
u have to flip a switch or manuel change the cable as 1 of our members mentioned before... HOWEVER u can add a bigger hd....

I wish I could help you more. I looked at doing this a long time ago and can't remember which bios to use. I do remember that there was a special set of bios's to use just for this task though. It's a little hard to find info on this subject as not that many people do it for some reason.

I've been thinking about this for a few minutes, and I think I was wrong. I think I got them confused, there definitely is a bios for no dvd drive, but maybe I just figured since no dvd drive--> that meant 2 harddrives. But I might have been wrong, I don't know.

I'm sorry, I mis-read your 1st post.
The following is speculation:
Your 2nd hdd would need to be formatted in an XBox format, but I think that it will show up as d:\ and you need to have a runnable prog in the root.(XBMC maybe). Then you can browse info with a file manager (current software is not designed to read/write to d.
Just my thoughts. _________________ I think I like fixing Boxes more than using them!

I thank you all for your help on this topic... I'm going to try and see what I can do about this further. But yeah the thompson dvd was doa. Will only say that every disk was dirty. I've tried to clean it, had it open and everything. Still no good. I'm not going to tweak the pots settings..
I would of thought their would be more information about dual hard drives. I find it strange that more people haven't tried it before.. But from what I have seen so far I find the problem lies with Xbox Kernel. So That's the area I am going to explore...
I'll post anything I find..

it sounds like you have a dirty or mis-aligned laser. Check for a re-alignment Tutorial. _________________ I think I like fixing Boxes more than using them!

Lee,
You posted to someone else about being able to use a USB hard drive to play games and run different apps from.. Are you sure that it can do this?? I thought only the 360 can see USB Hard drives... I'll take a hard look at this....
